How to Transfer files between Android and PC Wirelessly – Guide

One of the most common things people need to do is transfer files from their mobile device or tablet to the desktop. Sometimes it’s a photo, sometimes a song, and often it’s some kind of document, presentation, or other file that needs to be transferred. In fact, there are a couple of ways to transfer files from Android to PC (and vice versa) and we are going to see them here. You can connect your Android to your PC with a cable and move files the old-fashioned way, but this method is time-consuming and difficult to navigate. Try wireless file transfers.

Transferring files between PC and Android systems is quite easy once you learn how to do it. While Apple users can use AirDrop to move files wirelessly between iOS and macOS, Android users need to think outside the box. Just because Android file transfers require a third-party app doesn’t mean they’re impossible. As it is easy to move your files irrespective of a specific OS destination, unlike AirDrop, you can transfer documents to Windows and Mac.

Moving files with a USB cable

Unlock your Android phone and connect it to your PC using a USB cable.

Your phone will detect the connection and show a notification.

If you connected the phone for the first time on a computer, you will see something like ‘Charge this device via USB’.

Tap on it and it will bring up a longer list of options under ‘Use USB connection for’. Select the option called File Transfer or MTP (Media Transfer Protocol). You can choose to choose this option just once or always.

Your phone now it will start to show up in File Explorer on your computer, and you can transfer files between the phone and PC as you would a USB drive.

When finished, remove the cable. Just make sure all transfer tasks are complete.

Using ADB to move files

Android Debug Bridge (ADB) is also an option for transferring files between an Android device and a Windows computer. It’s not the easiest way and will be preferred by those familiar with the command prompt. To use ADB to transfer files, you will need ADB configuration on your computer.

To use ADB commands, you can connect your phone to your PC using a USB cable or execute commands wirelessly. While wireless ADB is very easy with Android 11 or newer, it needs a little more work with Android 10 or older.

To send or receive files using ADB on your phone you will use the following commands.

Get a file of your phone to your computer.

adb pull /sdcard/filename pathonPC

Send a file from your PC to your phone.

adb push pathonPC /sdcard/path

Using USB OTG to transfer files

This USB specification allows devices such as smartphones to host USB devices such as thumb drives, mice and keyboards. USB OTG support depends on the hardware present in your smartphone, but if it supports OTG, you can use a USB stick to transfer files to or from your computer. Depending on your phone’s USB port on your USB drive, you may also need an adapter.

After successfully connecting your USB flash drive to your phone, you can open it with any file manager and transfer files between the drive and your phone. Then you can connect the same drive to your computer and transfer the copied files from your phone. This can also be done vice versa. You can even connect external hard drives to your phone as long as your phone can feed them and transfer files and folders.

Using cloud storage services to transfer files

If you have Internet access on your Android phone and Windows computer, using a cloud storage service like Google Drive, OneDrive or Dropbox it can be very easy to transfer files between the two devices. Using cloud storage is useful for small to medium-sized files, but if you have large files or a limited data connection, you’re better off using one of the other methods.

To transfer files using a cloud storage service, open the cloud storage service provider app. For this guide, let’s say that application is Google Drive. Upload the file or files you want on your computer to Google Drive.

Open Google Drive on your computer. If you have the Google Drive client installed, use it. Otherwise, open your web version.

Download the files you just uploaded and you’re done. You can delete them from Google Drive to free up space if needed, or keep them as a backup.

Using Bluetooth to Transfer Files

Bluetooth is another wireless connection option that allows you to transfer files between phone and your computer. But Bluetooth is quite slow and only useful for small transfers. Otherwise you will end up up waiting too long for the transfer to complete. To transfer files using Bluetooth, you first need to pair your phone with your computer.

Enable Bluetooth on both devices and make it discoverable. Now use your phone or your PC to start the pairing process.

Select the other device and confirm the pairing request.

Once the two devices are paired, you can start transferring files.

Go to your Windows PC and open the Bluetooth and other devices settings page. If you can’t find it, type the name in the search box next to the Windows icon.

On the Bluetooth and other devices settings page, select Send or receive files via Bluetooth from the options provided on the right.

Choose Send files if you want to send files from your PC to your phone.

Then select your phone from the list of paired devices.

Choose the file or files you want to upload in the browser window and click upload.

Your phone will receive a notification about the file being received. Approve it and it will be transferred to your phone.

If you want to upload a file from your phone to your PC, select Receive files from the Bluetooth file transfer wizard.

Then use a file manager to locate the file or files you want to transfer to your phone.

Now tap on the share button and use Bluetooth as the transfer mode in the share menu.

The other device will receive a notification and may need to approve the transfer.

Once approved, the transfer will be completed. Now you can choose the default location or a different location to save the received file.
