How to Turn On/Off iMessage Read Receipts – Guide
When it comes to “Read Receipts” for iMessage in iOS 9.3.5 and earlier, you had two choices: turn it on for everyone or turn it off for everyone. So if you didn’t want one or two of your contacts to know whether or not you read their messages, you had to disable the function and lose read receipts to people you knew better. In any case, this is no longer the case. You can choose which contacts have read receipts turned on or off on your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch, as long as you’re running iOS 10 or higher. Let’s get started because it’s a very easy procedure.
Disabling (or enabling) read receipts for individual contacts
First, open any conversation in the Messages app. From here, tap the “i” (info) button in the top right corner you will see a new option called “Send read receipts”. If you have read receipts enabled for everyone, this button must be activated. If you have read receipts turned off for everyone, they should be turned off.
When you have read receipts turned off for everyone, but you want that person to be able to see that you read their iMessages, just turn that on. On the other hand, when you have read receipts turned on for everyone, you can turn off the “Send read receipts” option for that individual contact.
This option is only available in iMessage-enabled conversations, but this is to be expected. Regular SMS conversations (the ones with green bubbles) don’t support Read Receipt functionality to begin with, so the other party will never know if you’ve read their messages or not. Group messages also do not have read receipt functionality, no matter if they are SMS or iMessages, so keep that in mind.
Also, iOS won’t remember your individual contact settings if you go to the main Messages settings and turn “Send read receipts” on and off (or off and on) for everyone, so you’ll have to redo them later.
