How to Use a Android Phone as Security Key – Guide
Google today announced that any phone running Android 7 or later can now be used as a physical security key for two-factor authentication. This offers an even more secure way of logging into Google apps than the various other 2FA methods that Google currently offers. So if you need a physical device to verify your login, you don’t need to buy a dongle, just use your phone. To make your Android phone your security key, all you need to do is connect your phone to a Chrome browser via Bluetooth to verify logins. The new authentication system works on Gmail, G Suite, Google Cloud and all other Google account services and uses the FIDO authentication standard. Google says other sites can be added later, but it’s still in the process of certifying its authentication service.
Google offers several ways to add 2-Step Verification to better protect your account and make it more secure. However, the easiest way is to register your phone as a means of verification, which you can do on an Android or iPhone device. While an Android device automatically includes the necessary functionality, an iPhone requires an additional app called Google Smart Lock; from there, the process works the same on both types of devices. When you use your phone as a security key, you don’t have to deal with PINs or codes sent by SMS or phone call to verify login to a Google account on a computer. Instead, you confirm login by answering yes to a prompt on your phone. The only downside is that this type of verification only works with Google logins via Chrome, not other browsers like Firefox or Microsoft Edge.
