How to Use Chrome’s Deep-Linking Feature – Guide
Link to Text Fragment is a new Google extension for Chrome that allows you to create URLs for specific text on a web page, regardless of the page’s formatting. Once the extension is installed, simply highlight the text you want to link to, right-click and select “Copy link to selected text”. The link can be opened and shared by anyone using a supported browser. For example, clicking this link in Chrome or Edge will take you directly to a highlighted section in final of the article.
The Google extension is based on a new feature recently added to Chromium: Text Snippets. This is the same technology that Google sometimes uses to link to specific parts of a webpage in search results. However, these URLs can be long and difficult to create manually if you are linking to longer sections of text or complex web pages where the same words appear several times. This extension simplifies the build process.
The links created by the extension are compatible with all Chromium-based browsers from version 80 onwards, but not all browsers support them. Google’s blog post points out that Firefox and Safari did not announce that they would implement the feature until yesterday. When you click on a link in these browsers, you simply go to the top of the linked web page without the text being highlighted.
