How to Use Face ID on iPhone while Wearing a Mask – Guide
Across the world, wearing a mask is now a common trend, thanks to the Corona virus, with masks being a daily necessity in the UK indoors. However, wearing a mask poses a problem: people who wear masks complain that they can easily unlock their iPhones. One of the problems with wearing a mask—aside from sore ears from twisting—is that it makes it difficult to unlock your iPhone if you trust the Face ID. This is a problem for all iPhone users from iPhone X onwards, as new generations rely on facial recognition instead of fingerprint recognition.
An iOS update (iOS 13.5) was released in April 2020 which meant users could quickly swipe up on the iPhone to waive the face ID requirement and instead unlock using the password but the hassle of using ID face mask has not disappeared so far. If you don’t want to enter your password every time you need to unlock your iPhone while wearing a mask, a new option was introduced in iOS 14.5 which means you can unlock your iPhone while using a mask. The only requirement is that you will need an Apple Watch running watchOS 7.4.
We’ll walk you through the steps you need to take to define up Unlock iPhone with Apple Watch below. We’ll also look at your options if you want to unlock your iPhone via Face ID while wearing a mask and don’t have an Apple Watch.
Iphone: How to wear face identification with a mask
With Apple Watch
- Make sure you are running iOS 14.5 on iPhone and watchOS 7.4 on Apple Watch or later
- On iPhone, go to Settings > Face ID and Password
- Swipe down and under Unlock with Apple Watch, tap the toggle button next to Apple Watch
- Now, when Face ID detects that you are wearing a mask, your iPhone will use Apple Watch to unlock it.
Without Apple Watch
- Go to Settings> Face ID and Password
- You can try doing the first step as an alternative look or choose to reset the face id
- After choosing the Set up face id or set Up Alternative appearance, fold your mask in half and hold it up In your face
- If your iPhone says “Face clogged”, slowly move the mask away from the center of the face until it says “Move your head slowly to complete the circle” (Xuanwu Lab recommends covering only the face tip from your nose; cover too much and you will get an error)
- Complete two scans of your face with the mask folded in the same orientation
- You should see “Face ID is now set up”
- Put on your mask, covering your entire face, test if it works to unlock your iPhone
Here’s what these steps look like:
Part 2 (optional)
- If Face ID is not working consistently after configuring Face ID with a doubled mask, go back to Settings > Face ID and Password
- Tap Set Up Alternate Appearance (if you chose alternate to step 1 above, you will need to reset the face ID and make part 1 back to the main face and make part 2 as an alternate appearance)
- Fold the mask and place it on the other side of the face than in part 1
- Complete the two Face ID setup scans
- Put your mask on, covering your entire face
- test if it’s working
- Face ID should still work when you’re not wearing the mask too
