How to use Microsoft Authenticator as password manager – Guide
Password supervision in various programs between your PC and mobile phone normally requires a secret key supervisor. That is, unless you use the Microsoft Authenticator app. Despite the fact that it was intended to provide two-factor confirmation for your web-based accounts, its capabilities have been extended to also oversee passwords in Microsoft Edge and Chrome. Microsoft Authenticator thinks well of other validation apps, but that’s hard to say when you compare it to unlimited passphrase supervisors like LastPass, Dashlane, Keeper, and 1Password.
Anyway, despite restricted elements and program support, the free Microsoft Authenticator has its purposes. The app can adjust your website passwords in Edge on iOS/iPadOS and Android gadgets and in Chrome on your desktop via an expansion; Enter your passwords with Microsoft Autofill; secure logins with 2FA; and import passwords from different administrations.
Microsoft Authenticator can produce, store and apply passwords to websites through an autofill job. In addition to supporting iOS, iPadOS, and Android gadgets, the autofill option works through an expansion to Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge desktop forms.
How to use Microsoft Authenticator as password manager
Create a Microsoft account
For this to work, you need a Microsoft account. If you don’t already have one, go to the Microsoft account website (opens in a new window) and create an account with a pre-existing or new email address. Create a password and follow the steps necessary to generate your account.
Enable password settings
Once the account is created, you can install Microsoft Authenticator from Apple’s App Store (opens in a new window) or Google Play (opens in a new window). Once the app is installed, you need to point it as your device’s password manager. Go to Settings > Passwords > Autofill Passwords on an iPhone or iPad. Check the Authenticator entry. If Keychain is checked, you will have to uncheck that as well.
On Android, go to Settings > System > Languages & Input > Autofill Service, or as it is nested on your device. In the list of autocomplete services, tap the entry for Authenticator.
import passwords
Open the Microsoft Authenticator app and sign in with your Microsoft account. After adding and syncing your Microsoft account, tap on the Passwords icon at the bottom. If you already store passwords through another app, the first task on your to-do list is to import those passwords into Microsoft Authenticator. The app can import passwords from several other programs, including Google Chrome, Firefox, LastPass, Bitwarden, and RoboForm.
With Chrome, you can import passwords directly. Open Chrome on mobile and go to Settings > Passwords > Export Passwords and tap Export Passwords. Choose Authenticator as the destination. Return to Authenticator to see imported passwords.
For all other programs, you must generate a CSV file that can be imported into Authenticator. The steps to generate a CSV file vary from application to application. In general, look for the Settings or Options menu in your password manager or web browser and find a Passwords category, which should include an Export Passwords command. Follow the steps to create the CSV file and move it to your mobile device or cloud-based storage service that you can access from your mobile device.
In the Authenticator app, open the menu and go to Settings > Import passwords. tap on button for CSV import. Browse and select the CSV file. You will then return to the Authenticator to see your imported passwords.
Sync Passwords with Microsoft Autofill
Your next task is to start saving logins for new accounts or accounts that have not yet been imported into Authenticator. For that, you turn to Microsoft Autofill, which is integrated with Edge and can be used with Chrome through an extension.
