How to Connect Your Phone, Tablet, or Laptop to Your TV – Guide
Nowadays, phones they are not just for making calls. Smartphones are rich in technology and one of their many uses is for streaming. Even better news: you don’t have to strain your eyes watching videos on your small screen phone. Instead, you can project this media – like your favorite TV show or a home movie you want to share – from your smartphone (and tablets and laptop computers too) directly on the TV. The process is called “screen mirroring” (sometimes “screen projection”). See how.
What do you need
In addition to the technology mentioned, you will need a Wi-Fi compatible smart TV or any TV with an HDMI port (see “Use a wire”). Most smart TVs have built-in screen mirroring, but if they don’t, you can also plug an Apple TV ($149–$199) or Google Chromecast ($30–$50) into your TV to get the job done.
Apple users
Macs and iPhones are easy to use features that allow you to share your screen with another device (in this case, your smart TV). Go to “Settings”, then “General” and click “AirPlay”. Search for your TV set in the list of local devices, select your TV name and sit down.
Android users
The process is a little more complicated for Android users. In the “Settings” menu, look for “Screen Broadcast”. Not all Android phones will have it, but if yours does, select it and choose your TV as the broadcast destination. If you don’t have it, try Google Home app (you will have to download it; it’s free).

You don’t need to have the latest or most expensive technology for this option. Many TVs (regardless of age) have an HDMI port on the back, so you can connect a USB cable from your device directly to the TV. Know what kind of cable you need before you buy it (one end should be suitable for your device and the other for your TV; you may also need an adapter). This option is easier with laptops, as they often have outputs that you can readily connect to. Once connected at both ends, use the remote control to switch from regular channels to HDMI input. You’ll see what’s on your device playing directly on your TV screen.
