How to Dis­able the Down­load bar in Chrome Browser – Guide

The moment you archive the logs in Chrome, a bar shows up at the bottom of the window. Shows the file being downloaded and the progress of the download. You can close this bar by tapping next button in the right corner. It will not affect the download.

The file download will continue and you can open the Downloads page in Chrome (Ctrl + J) to see the download progress. In case the bar bothers you and you prefer not to close it every time you download a file, you can disable the Downloads bar in Chrome with an extension.

Extensions to the rescue

  • Since Chrome doesn’t offer any switches or buttons to turn off the download shelf, you should use extensions to get the job done. After spending some time on the Chrome Web Store, I found three extensions that can help you get rid of the download shelf quite easily.

    • Disable download bar

  • With the Disable Download Bar extension, disabling the download shelf in Chrome couldn’t be easier. Go to the Chrome Web Store, install Disable download bar and you’re done. The download shelf will never mount its ugly head as long as you keep the extension installed. Download Disable the download bar
  • You can also hide the Disable download bar extension icon as it is really useless and terminates up messing up up the Chrome UI unnecessarily. To do this, right-click on the extension and select Hide. You can still access it through the Chrome menu if you wish.

    • AutoHideDownloadsBar

  • AutoHideDownloadsBar is another extension that completely disables the download shelf once you’ve finished installing it. However, it does contain some additional options that you can use to customize how the extension works. And they are worth seeing. Download AutoHideDownloadsBar
  • Start by right-clicking the extension icon and selecting Options. In the Settingsup window that appears, you can change the different options listed under. They’re pretty self-explanatory, so spend some time playing with them.
  • You can, for example, bring briefly up the download tray during a download and then automatically close it. Or you can change the way the extension’s icon works each time you click it – it might display the Downloads folder on your computer, Chrome’s download manager, or a pop-up listing all your downloads. There is also an option that will notify you whenever the download status of files changes.

  • Closing the download bar works differently. It doesn’t disable the download shelf in Chrome. Instead, it provides a shortcut that you can use to hide the download shelf whenever you like. Download Close the download bar
  • After installing it, press Alt+W keyboard shortcut to get rid of the download shelf in an instant. This works wonders as you don’t have to manually point your cursor at the little “X” icon in the download shelf whenever you want to close it. If you don’t hate the download shelf and want to keep using it, this extension should make it less tedious to manage.
  • You can also modify the shortcut to include any other key you like. Start by clicking on the extension icon – in the floating window that appears up, click Edit. You can then add any key combination you can use to close the download bar.

    • Disable download tray in incognito mode

  • If you want to use one of the extensions listed above in Chrome’s incognito mode, you need to make some configuration for the extension settings. Otherwise, you cannot disable or hide the download shelf when browsing privately.
  • Start by right-clicking the extension icon in a normal Chrome window – from the context menu that appears, select Manage Extensions. Scroll through the list of options and then clear the button next to Allow in incognito mode. This should make the extension functional in incognito mode.

  • Now that you have deactivated the download shelf, you will no longer be bothered whenever you download a file. Remember, you can always access Chrome’s built-in download manager at any time to manage your downloads – bring it along up the Chrome menu and click Downloads. I bet you already know that.
  • But an even quicker way to get there is to use the keyboard shortcut – press the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + J to instantly display Chrome’s download manager in a new tab. Or, if you’ve opted for AutoHideDownloadsBar, you can also link the extension’s icon to Chrome’s download manager.
