The first step in fixing this issue is to determine which version of Minecraft the server is running. The easiest way to do this is to add the server to the server list and then press the “refresh” button button.
You should see something like the image below, and in the right corner, the game versions allowed by the servers would be shown. In the case of the image below, any Minecraft version between 1.7 and 1.12 can join the server without any problems.
