Fix that File Explorer does not open on Windows 10

Change display settings

  • Press the Windows key once
  • Select Settings from the start menu
  • Click on System
  • In the System window, select the View tab in the left pane (if it isn’t already there).
  • In the display tab, change the size of your text using the bar in the right pane. This should be the bar below Change the size of text, apps and other items: 100% (recommended) You can choose any percentage except 175%. Setting the threshold to 175% is known to cause the issue.

    • Close programs like antivirus

  • Press the CTRL, SHIFT and ESC keys simultaneously (CTRL + SHIFT + ESC).
  • This should open Task Manager.
  • In the task manager, click on Processes
  • The Processes tab has several columns, look at the Description column and find the process related to AVG antivirus. It must have an AVG name or something related to AVG.
  • Select the anti-virus process from the list and click End Process (bottom right corner).
  • Click Yes when prompted for confirmation.

    • Restart File Explorer

  • Press the CTRL, SHIFT and ESC keys simultaneously (CTRL + SHIFT + ESC).
  • This should open Task Manager.
  • In the task manager, click on Processes
  • Locate and select Windows Explorer.
  • Click on the bottom Restart in the bottom right corner.

    • Change File Explorer Options

  • Press and hold the Windows key and press R
  • Type control panel and press Enter or click OK
  • Type File Explorer Options into the search bar
  • Select File Explorer Options
  • This will open the Folder Options
  • Select the General tab if not already.
  • Select This PC from the drop-down menu under Open File Explorer to:
  • When finished, click OK.

    • Clear cache and create new path

  • On the toolbar, right-click the File Explorer icon and select Unpin from toolbar.
  • Press and hold the Windows key and press R
  • Type control panel and press Enter or click OK
  • Type File Explorer Options into the search bar
  • Select File Explorer Options
  • This will open the Folder Options
  • Select the General tab if not already.
  • On the General tab, click the Clear button. button in the Privacy section.
  • Now close Windows Explorer by clicking the X in the upper right corner of the window
  • Right-click on the desktop in any empty space.
  • Click New and Shortcut.
  • This will open the Create new shortcut.
  • In the dialog box, type C:Windowsexplorer.exe and click Next.
  • Rename this file to File Explorer and click Finish.
  • The shortcut will be created on the desktop.
  • Right-click this shortcut and select Pin to Taskbar.

    • Disable Windows Search

  • Press the Windows key once
  • Enter command prompt in the Start Search box
  • Right-click Command Prompt in the search results and select Run as administrator.
  • When prompted for confirmation, click Yes.
  • Type exe stop “Windows search” at the command prompt and press Enter. Make sure it is spelled exactly as mentioned, with spaces, capital letters, and quotation marks.
