How to Make a Photo Collage in Paint.NET – Guide

We will be using the Shapes tool to create the square shapes, Move Selected Pixels to align the square on Canvas, and the Magic Wand tool to create the selection to help us insert images. Microsoft Paint is a basic graphics program that comes installed on all versions of Windows. Paint is a pretty simple program, but one of its uses is creating photo collages to email or post online. Collages allow people to see multiple photos at once without having to scroll through them. Photo collages can also be printed and published on the home or workplace.

You should know that Paint.NET doesn’t come with a collage wizard or ready-made templates. This means you will have to design everything from scratch. But the result final is arguably superior to the collages you get from some smartphone apps, for example.

  • The first thing you need to do is set the collage file size. Click on File, select New and set the height, width and resolution for the document in the pop-up window. The file size may depend on the images you want to import. For example, if your images are 300 x 300 pixels, you should create at least one 600 x 600 pixel file.
  • Select Layers from the menu bar and click “Import from file”. Choose the image you want to use and click on it to bring it into the collage. You can drag the image to reposition it and use the little dots on the outside to resize it.
  • With the previous steps, your image line up in squares on the collage document. But what if you want to rotate and reposition an image? After importing the image (Layers + “Import from File”), highlight the image layer and click Deselect in the toolbar (red X icon). Select Layers and click “Rotate / Zoom”, keyboard shortcuts are Ctrl + Shift + Z.
  • The white collage background is fine, but you can liven things up up with color. Select the background layer, grab the Bucket Tool and choose a color from the palette. Now just click on the background.
  • So far, the images you’ve uploaded have no border / outline. To get the borders, select an image in the Layers window, click Effects on the menu bar, and choose Object. Click on “Object Outline” in the pop-up window. You can choose the width, smoothness, color and angle of edge / contour. Drag the sliders to adjust the width and smoothness and move the pointer to the color you want. When finished, click OK and repeat the process for the other images.
  • To make the collage stand out a bit, you can add text to an image or the entire collage. Use the palette and choose the text color first. Select the layers and click “Add new layer”, this action ensures that the lines of text up well with the rest of the document. Click the “T” icon under Tools and select your font style and size. Position the cursor where you want the text and type. To manually move text, place the arrows in a square and move it around the document. You can further embellish the text by underlining it, and the method is the same as described in step 5. Selecting Angle from the Outline Object menu lets you highlight just one side of the text and create an effect. luminous.
  • When you’re happy with the design, click File, select “Save As” and name the collage. Here it is important to choose the file format from the “Save as type” menu because the document is saved as Paint.NET (.pdn) by default. In most cases, JPEG, PNG, and PDF work fine, but if you want to print your collage, it might be better to save it as a TIFF.
