How to Save WebP as JPG or PNG on Windows and Mac – Guide
Google’s proprietary WEBP image format is arguably better than the standard JPG or PNG format. It creates a much smaller file size than JPG and still supports transparency feature of PNG without much loss of quality. It’s being used by many websites today, including YouTube, Google Play Store, and Facebook’s Android app.
As ideal as it is, it is still not supported by many image editors and online submission forms. I personally have to deal with WEBP images quite often in my work, so I found many ways to save WEBP images in JPG or PNG, each having its own advantage. In this post, I will share my findings with you.
Download Google Chrome ‘Save Image As’ extension
To choose a file type before saving it, you’ll need to download a Google extension extension from a third-party developer. The ‘Save Image As Type’ extension is very easy to install. Just click Add to Chrome in the upper-right corner of this page. A small notice will appear in Google Chrome asking you to confirm that you want to add the extension. Go ahead and click Add Extension in that window.
Save WebP files as PNG or JPG in Chrome
After installing the extension in Google Chrome, by right-clicking, each image will have an extra option. Instead of the well-known “Save image as…” button, at the bottom of the menu, there will be a new option “Save image as type”. This is the option you want to select to save a file in the desired format.
Go ahead and find the WebP image you want to save as a JPG. Once you’ve located it, right click on the image and hover over ‘Save image as type’ at the bottom of the menu. A side menu will appear giving the option to save as PNG or JPG. The next part is completely up for you. Typically, PNG files are of better quality and lend themselves better to editing, but up more space. On the other hand, JPG files are heavily compressed, making them smaller but of lower quality.
Play around with the options and find what suits you best. Saving an image as a JPG or PNG can be useful more often than you think, especially considering that many online images don’t work well when saved as the file type provided to users by Google Chrome.
