How to Set up Google Alerts – Guide

Google Alerts is a free tool from Google that allows you to monitor the web for mentions. Basically, it sends emails to a user when Google finds new results that match a user’s search term. This is fantastic for marketers as you can get alerts whenever your name, company or keywords are mentioned anywhere on the internet. Getting started with Google Alerts is quick and easy. In this article, you will learn why you should use this brand monitoring tool and how to start.

Google Alerts is great because it gets results from all over the web. The process is not real-time, you are not constantly bombarded, and it is not a daily newsletter. However, for many social media marketers or online reputation managers, using Google Alerts is almost as good as getting real-time updates on important issues across the web. If you’ve done a lot of Google searches or media scrutiny for a keyword, you can use alerts to do the same thing more efficiently. Below are the steps to set up google alerts.

How to to define up Google Alerts

  • Open the Google Alerts page in your browser (mobile or dekstop) and enter a topic of your choice. For example, I typed in “OnePlus 7 Pro” because you need to get on the hype train. Now, to refine the alert, click on ‘Show options’.
  • Here, scroll through all the options and customize the alerts filter. I selected “once a day” to avoid too much confusion. Finally, click on “Create Alert” button and you are ready to receive alerts.
  • To give you an idea, this is what the alert email looks like.
  • You can also set the Google alert to be delivered at a specific time. Just click on the gear icon and choose the delivery time.
  • If you have multiple alerts, you can choose to group all alerts into a single summary email. Just check the Digest option and click the Save button button.
  • Finally, when you are done, you can delete or customize the alerts by clicking the button buttons next to your alert topic.
