Finding a system that is capable of playing games, and playing them well, without appearing or feeling like a gaming computer is one of my favorite ways to get the most out of my laptop. The Dell XPS 15, which looks and feels like an alternative to the MacBook Pro but is still capable of performance as good as that of many gaming laptops, is one of the top performers in this sneaky category.
However, the ability to game well is merely a plus. The fact that this is a compact and stylish device that can be used for editing photos and videos as well as design work is the primary draw for creative professionals. The Blade laptops produced by Razer cover some of the same ground as the XPS 15, but they lack the XPS 15’s crossover office-ready design and feel.

Dell XPS 15 (2023): Design
When Dell released the XPS 15 model for 2023, we were surprised to see that the only change was an upgrade to 13th-generation processors and RTX 40 graphics processing units. Yes, the style was changed in 2020, which was the first time in five years that it had been changed. But the smaller XPS 13 series got a big makeover last year, so I thought the bigger models would get the same.
We didn’t do it, and that’s okay. Not everything that is good has to be new. This laptop is silver on the outside and black on the inside. This year, there isn’t a Frost with an Arctic White interior, which is interesting because that color was pretty new for the 15-inch size to begin with. Keyboard and Touchpad
The Dell XPS 15 (2024) keyboard has normal chiclet-style keys and a backlight. It’s great that it works well and is easy to type on. That’s pretty much all there is to say about the whole thing. The same keyboard has been around for a long time.
The laptop is made of metal, but the palm rest is made of woven carbon fiber composite material that is black. It’s the same standard Dell XPS design we’ve seen since I started using them. We’ve always liked how smooth and soft it is. A fingerprint reader is also built into the power button on the laptop, which is fine. On this laptop, you can choose between a fingerprint reader and face recognition.
Dell XPS 15 (2023): Performance
With the higher specs you can choose from, it can constantly run at a high level, which makes it almost like a gaming laptop but not quite. It can even do ray tracing, which isn’t very impressive compared to real game computers, but it’s still there. And when it came to getting things done and being creative, I didn’t notice any slowdowns or problems. Even when I worked or played hard, the air system did its job and kept the laptop from getting too hot.
But standard tests show a different picture. When comparing results for tests like 3D Mark’s Time Spy and Fire Strike, the XPS 15 2023 easily beats the Samsung Galaxy Book3 Ultra and the XPS 15 2022. But in Night Raid, Cinebench R23, and GeekBench 5, the results are either the same or even lower.
Dell XPS 15 (2023): Battery
The XPS 15 lasted 8 hours and 58 minutes on the Tom’s Guide battery test, which involved steady web surfing at 150 nits of screen brightness. Last year’s XPS 15 OLED lasted for 10 hours and 5 minutes, so that’s a big drop. It’s also cheaper than the Galaxy Book 3 Ultra (10:01) and the MacBook Pro 16-inch 2023 (16:37).
Final Words
After its predecessor, the Dell XPS 15 (2022), received a flawless score, the pressure was on for the 2023 model. In most respects, it succeeds admirably. The Ultrabook’s durability is compromised by a few isolated incidents, making it less reliable than its predecessor.

Both the Dell XPS 13 (2021) and the Framework Laptop (2022) are top-tier ultraportable Windows laptops. The Dell offers a slightly superior user experience because to its larger touchpad, sharper speakers, brighter display, and more accommodating keyboard. It’s easier to transport and the battery lasts longer, too.
That’s a big gain over the Dell XPS 15 OLED 2021 from last year, which lasted less than 8 hours in the same test. The 2022 model beats the Lenovo Yoga 9i Gen 7 (8:06) and the Alienware x14 (5:35) in our battery test now that it lasts more than 10 hours.
