Edifier, a well-known name in the world of audio, has done it again, and this time they have introduced the MP230 portable speaker. Many Edifier items, including earbuds, headphones, gaming headphones, and even the Edifier S2000MKIII bookshelf speakers, have been examined and evaluated by our staff.
The Edifier MP230 is a portable Bluetooth speaker that takes its design cues from the classic radios that your grandparents probably had in the 1950s. Because of how remarkable this design is, it was recognized as an innovation award winner at CES 2022. The speaker can be purchased from Amazon for a price of £100.

Edifier MP230 review: Design

Don’t worry, you haven’t woken up in the 1960s. The MP230 is meant to look like it belongs in another era. Most small Bluetooth speakers are made of a mix of rubber and plastic, and sometimes something softer to take the edge off. The MP230, on the other hand, has a cabinet made of MDF.
On the front, below the fabric-covered speaker grille, there are five copper-colored “piano key” buttons and a light that shows where the music is coming from. Even though the MP230 comes with directions, it’s pretty easy to use. The plus and minus buttons change the volume, but a longer press on either one will also skip back or forward. The play/pause button does what it says on the box. You can buy this speaker from its official website
Edifier MP230 review: Features
Even though the MP230 looks old-fashioned on the outside, the inside is more modern. Bluetooth 5.0 is your main way to connect, and we found the range and stability to be great. Even though there were walls and other home obstacles in the way, the link stayed strong up to about 13 meters away.
The card hole on the back of the phone is a bit of a throwback. It works with microSD and TransFlash cards (if you can find them) and starts playing when you put one in. However, since it doesn’t have a screen or an app to go with it, you’ll have to remember what’s on the card to find the song you want.
Edifier MP230 review: Sound quality

The Edifier MP230 has great sound clarity. First of all, it sounds really loud for how small it is. The speaker itself is not very big. The Edifier MS50A is a lot bigger than this. (which Android Headlines reviewed as well). You would definitely put it on a desk or a small table.
Even though the speaker is small, it makes a loud, full sound. There’s enough power to make anything you’re listening to sound better. In addition, the music is well-balanced. This speaker has a nice amount of bass, but it’s not too loud like most Bluetooth speakers on the market right now.
Edifier MP230 review: Performance
The MP230 houses a passive radiator and two Class D amplified 48mm full-frequency drivers. A speaker of this size can’t possibly rock the house, but things seem promising so far. The spoken vocals on Craig Finn’s Messing with the Settings seem natural, and the rhythm section is robust enough to keep things going.
But there isn’t much punch to the drums, and the sound doesn’t split up very effectively. However, this is typical for a speaker of this size. The straightforward introduction of PUP’s “Four Chords” is good, but the MP230 starts to struggle when the song expands to include more than just a single voice and piano.
Edifier MP230 review: Battery Life
The MP230 can connect to a source through Bluetooth 5.0. Its Texas Instruments TAS5822M amplifier chipset lets each of its two 48mm drivers put out 10W of power, and it can handle frequencies from 70Hz to 13kHz. The unit has a high-capacity lithium-polymer battery with a capacity of 2600 mAh, which should let it play Bluetooth music for up to 10 hours per charge.
Edifier MP230 review: Price and availability
If I had to pick one thing, it would be how long the battery lasts. Even though it’s a Bluetooth speaker, 10 hours just doesn’t seem like enough time. I would have liked to get more use out of my money. Compared to other speakers that cost that much on the market, it should last around 20 hours.
Final Words
Overall, there are a lot of good things about the Edifier MP230. It has a retro look, two 48mm drivers and passive radiators, and different ports that let you use an SD card or a wired link. During testing, we only used the Bluetooth link, but some people will be glad to have the choice. This speaker isn’t perfect, and it needs some changes, but if you want something that looks great and sounds great, you won’t be unhappy.
