It’s the kind of gaming laptop you get if you don’t have the time or money to build your own PC or buy one already made. Now that graphics card prices are back to something close to their MSRP and availability is starting to get back to normal, a gaming laptop is no longer a way to cheat at PC gaming.

My review model of the Origin EVO17-S has a screen with a resolution of 2560 x 1440, which we thought was very nice. It’s nice and big, bright (up to 395 nits), and colourful (reaching 98% sRGB and 71% AdobeRGB colour spaces).

No, it’s not 4K, but if gaming is your thing, we wouldn’t worry about that. Since, in my experience, graphics cards and broadband connections aren’t quite up to the task of 4K gaming yet, QHD is a much better place to be.

This version of the laptop is also 240Hz, which makes games run very smoothly, especially if you lower the resolution to 1080p. For example, in Grand Theft Auto 5, we got up to 157fps at QHD and 144 fps, and in Red Dead Redemption, we got 93/84 fps.

They also added a numpad on the right side. My fingers liked how the keys clicked, which was caused by the 72 grammes of force needed to press them and the 1.7 mm of key travel, which is more than our preference of 1.5 mm.

The cooling fans draw air from below the vehicle and blow it out of the vehicle around the rear corners. They can be heard, but strangely they don’t get annoying even when there’s a lot of pressure on the system, and they shouldn’t bother anyone else. When the laptop is in an idle state, the fans are barely audible, and they can be turned off entirely for fully silent operation—especially when the laptop is powered by its battery.

The base model of the Origin EVO17-S (2022) costs $2,499, but at the time this article was written, the company’s website was offering a $200 discount, bringing the total price down to $2,299. For that price, you get 16GB of RAM, an i7 12700H processor, an RTX3070Ti graphics card, and a 17.3-inch 1080p screen with a 144Hz refresh rate.
