The Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro are the best way to compare them to the Apple AirPods Pro for the Samsung Galaxy S21 line of phones. Active noise cancellation is a feature of both the Apple AirPods Pro and the Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro. Both earbuds also have spatial audio, which makes TV shows and movies sound more entertaining and immersive.
These buds have a battery life of five hours before they need to be charged again. It’s easy to see why both the Apple AirPods Pro and the Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro are on our list of the best true wireless earbuds. But if you have one of the best Samsung phones or a Samsung tablet.
The Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro have more than these basic features, and they can connect everything in Samsung’s ecosystem. For example, they can connect to multiple devices at once, support hands-free Bixby (but not Google Assistant), and work with the Samsung Galaxy Wearable app. As you’ll see in our review of the Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro, these earbuds also use Samsung’s own Scalable Audio technology.
This supports UHQ audio streaming over Bluetooth at up to 24-bit/96kHz, SmartThings Finder, and multi-mic recording, which lets you use the Buds as a lapel mic replacement when shooting videos on your Samsung phone.
Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro review: Design and Comfort
The Buds Pro are a mix of the Galaxy Buds Plus, which are in-ear headphones with silicone tips, and the Galaxy Buds Live, which are open-air headphones that they take some design ideas from. The outside has a mix of glossy and matte finishes that look good together, and it has been redesigned to stick out less from your ear
Samsung says that this new shell also “reduces the area of contact between your ear and the bud, making it more comfortable and less likely to feel like your ears are full.” Samsung got the message that some customers got tired of the wing tips on the Galaxy Buds Plus, so they took them off. Instead, you get the same three sizes of silicone ear tips.
Which are a bit shorter than before to help with the low-profile design. Samsung told me that it has thought about adding foam tips, but hasn’t done so yet. On the outside, you’ll also see a piece of mesh. This covers one of the three built-in microphones and keeps out wind when making voice calls. You can buy this earbuds from its official website.
Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro review: Sound quality
The big two-way speakers from Samsung pump out deep bass and clear mids. And even though Samsung’s Scalable Codec makes the sound on Galaxy phones louder, you can still enjoy lively music on devices that Samsung doesn’t make with only a small loss in quality.
It was shocking at first, but as the record went on, it made me nod my head in time to the beat. It was impressive to hear how well balanced the bass was and how Q-soft-spoken Tip’s vocals sounded louder. When dancing to “Could You Be Loved” by Bob Marley and The Wailers, people had the same thoughts. We got chills when we heard that catchy bassline at the beginning.
Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro review: Noise cancelling
Samsung released the Galaxy Buds Live in late 2020. They had active noise cancellation and other high-end features, but the weird bean-shaped earpieces made them hard to fit. This problem is fixed by the biggest change to the Galaxy Buds Pro. The Galaxy Buds Pro are a more traditional pair of noise-canceling true wireless earphones.
They have a traditional in-canal fit, and more attention was paid to ensuring they blocked out sound well. This is helped a lot by the ear tips, of which three pairs are in the box. But the well-made inner molding of the earpieces is what really helped block out noise and made them comfortable for me to wear.
On the inside of each earpiece, there are proximity sensors, charging contacts, and a microphone. On the outside, there are touch-sensitive zones and two microphones. The earpieces have an IPX7 rating for water resistance, which means they can handle a lot of water without getting damaged.
Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro review: Features
This section is nicely split into “Features of the Galaxy Buds Pro that everyone can use” and “Features of the Galaxy Buds Pro that Samsung fans will love.” First, let’s look at the first group. The battery life is “decent,” but not “outstanding.” With active noise cancellation turned on, you can expect around five hours of entertainment from the earbuds and another dozen or so from the charging case.
If you turn off the ANC, those times go up to about seven hours plus 20. You can get another hour of playback with just five minutes of charging via USB-C, and you can also use the Galaxy Buds Pro with any Qi-certified charging pad. Samsung, of course, owns Harman, and Harman, in turn, owns AKG, a famous brand of headphones.
AKG had a lot to do with the design and tuning of the Galaxy Buds Pro. The sound comes from a 6.5mm tweeter and an 11mm mid/bass driver in each earbud, which is a nice combination. Each earbud also has three mics, which take care of active noise cancellation, call quality, and voice control.
Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro review: Battery Life
The case for the Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro comes with a 472mAh battery, and each bud has a 61mAh battery. That would give you a total of 28 hours of play time without ANC and 20 hours with it. That’s a great battery life, and since the case supports both Qi wireless charging and USB-C charging, you never have to worry about running out of ways to charge.
5 minutes on a standard 5A pad lets you listen to music for about an hour, while it takes about 60 minutes to go from 0% to 100%. Samsung says that the buds can play music for 8 hours without the ANC and for about 5 hours with it turned on, but in our tests, we couldn’t quite match those numbers.
When we used a Galaxy S20 to test the Galaxy Buds Pro, they lasted just over 6 hours without ANC and about 4 hours with it. Again, we don’t think anyone will be comfortable with the Buds Pro in their ears for so long, but if you took a short break every hour or so, the battery life would be almost irrelevant.
Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro review: Price
When it was announced at Samsung Unpacked, the Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro went on sale along with the Samsung Galaxy S21 smartphone on Samsung’s website. The Galaxy Buds Pro cost $199, £219, or AU$349, depending on where you live. Even though the newer Galaxy Buds Pro 2 are out now, it might be harder to find the older ones, but when you do, they are likely to cost less.
On Amazon UK, where they sell for £114.95, the story is the same. It makes sense that the Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro would cost a little more at first than their predecessors, the Samsung Galaxy Buds Live, which cost $169.99/£179/AU$319 at launch. Given how much better the Pro versions are, it’s a good idea to get them. Find out how they compare by reading our review of the Samsung Galaxy Buds Live.
Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro review: Final words
Strangely enough, the Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro are a good idea. They are designed and built to be as professional as any nominal alternative. They are made to be very competitive. But when it comes to sound quality, they’re just as shy and hesitant as any other earbuds we’ve heard. They also don’t block out outside noise all that well. That means you can safely put them in the “also-rans” folder.
