How to assign graphics performance preferences to programs in Windows 11 – Guide
Windows 10 allows you to make custom graphics performance settings per application. This allows you to compose some apps for better performance, while tweaking others to increase battery life. The options are especially useful on devices with unified and dedicated graphics chips, as you can limit undemanding applications to just the low-power integrated processor.
Setting the Graphics Preference for Programs on Windows 11
- Open the OS Settings application, with the Windows-I shortcut or by selecting Start > Settings.
- Switch to System > Screen.
- Select Graphics on the page that opens.
Windows 11 displays a list of installed apps on the page and an option to find a specific desktop program or app from the Microsoft Store. The graphical preference setting for each is displayed in the list.
- If the program or application is already listed, activate it with one click and select options button.
- The graphical preferences window lists three options: – Let Windows decide (Power saving). – Energy saving. – High performance.
- Change the setting to the desired level and select save button to save it.
The graphics processing unit is listed for each performance level individually; this is useful on devices with built-in, dedicated graphics units as you can use preferences to switch between graphics adapters. Some applications or programs may be limited regarding the graphics adapter.
Note that it may be necessary to restart the application or program if it is already running.
If the program or application is not listed, use the page navigation option to manually add it to the page. The remaining steps are identical after a program or application is added.
Applications that Windows 11 lists by default cannot be removed, but can be reset if a custom setting has been assigned to them. Manually added programs and applications cannot be reset, only removed.
