How To Take Screenshot on Mac OS – Guide
There are several ways to take a screenshot on a Mac (or if you come from the PC world: print the screenshot on a Mac). We’ll walk through the different keyboard shortcuts and the various refinements you can make to screenshots, such as cropping them to a specific size or taking a screenshot of an area larger than your screen. We’ll also look at what to do when you can’t take the screenshot you want because you need to interact with your screen to get it.
Many of the following methods work on all versions of macOS, but there were a number of changes to the screen capture options that were introduced in macOS Mojave in 2018. So if you’re not running Mojave or higher, you may not have access to this.
Capture the entire screen
Capture a selected area
Capture a single window
This method doesn’t just capture windows – you can save the desktop, the menu bar, the dock, or even an open menu by itself.
Use Screenshot app
As long as you have at least MacOS Mojave, you should also have access to the Screenshot app. It provides three capture tools, plus options to save, show the pointer, and more. You can access this app by opening the Others folder in Launchpad, but it’s easier to use keyboard shortcuts.
Taking screenshots with Grab
Don’t feel like memorizing keyboard shortcuts? Grab allows you to create screenshots directly from the menu bar. The app also allows you to take delayed screenshots, just in case you need to set the scene before capturing an image on your screen.
If you are using MacOS Catalina or later, Grab is not included. instead it is features now resides in the Command + Shift + 5 key combination.
Timed Screenshots
With Grab, you can capture a specific section of the screen, an individual window, or the entire screen – the same three options described above. It also has a timed screen option, which gives you a 10-second delay before capturing the image.
This means that if you need to open a menu or place the pointer in the correct position, you will have time to do so.
Remember that your pointer will not appear. up in the image by default. If you want to ensure that it is captured in the frame, click Preferences on the main Capture menu and select the pointer icon in the pop-up resultingup window.
