How to extend notifications on MIUI Redmi devices – Guide

Chinese technology company Xiaomi has come a long way since its inception. Its cheap smartphones with good hardware, like the Redmi / Redmi Note series, are very popular in countries like India and China. Xiaomi’s smartphone MIUI operating system (integrated into Android) has also become a decent ROM. However, one of the disadvantages of MIUI is that you cannot simply expand notifications from the notification bar.

This is relatively easier on standard Android, where all you have to do is swipe down on a notification to expand it. However, due to Android’s flexibility, we can easily get this much needed feature in Xiaomi phones (without having to root our phones!). All we need to do is install a simple app called Material Notification Shade from the Play Store.

If you used a standard Android device, or even a Samsung or OnePlus phone, you will be familiar with my words. For the ignorant, MIUI does not support a single tap on notifications to expand them. You have to swipe with two fingers to expand notifications. This is inconvenient and the problem doesn’t end there. While the two-finger swipe gesture works for third-party apps like Microsoft SMS Organizer, Truecaller, WhatsApp, etc., somehow it doesn’t work for all apps, including the default SMS app.

Expand notifications with one finger on Xiaomi MIUI

First, a word about the standard way to extend notifications in MIUI. If you want to expand a WhatsApp notification to read messages, you need to swipe down with two fingers on the notification to expand it. This is very inconvenient and you just open the app instead.

Starting with Android Marshmallow, handling notifications is much more advanced. You can not only expand notifications, but also edit individual notifications within a package. For example, if you receive 5 emails, you can use the notification bar to reply to one of these five emails yourself. These functions are not available by default in MIUI.

The Material Notification Shade adds all the functionality of the Android notification bar to your Xiaomi device. It replaces your default MIUI notification tab with Android’s default notification tab. With this app, you can expand notifications by simply swiping them with a finger.

For this app to work, all you need to do is install it from the Play Store. Then open the app and make sure it is activated. It will ask for permission to access notifications. Once you allow access, the app should be up and running, and you won’t have to worry about it anymore.

Due to the aggressive destruction of MIUI applications, it may be necessary to lock this application in memory. Otherwise, it will continue to terminate the app, taking you back to the old notifications tab. Here it is how to lock the app in memory –

As soon as you press the lock button, the app will remain permanently in memory until you exit it. You may have to reopen it every time you restart your phone as it may have autostart issues. All you need to do is open the app and make sure it’s activated.
