If you don’t want to move a chart while changing the cell width, you can lock the chart’s position in an Excel worksheet with these instructions. Although the chart moves according to the width and position of cells, you can turn it off. In Excel, it is very easy to insert a Gantt chart or PivotChart. However, the problem starts when you add more cells or columns after inserting a chart into a worksheet. By default, Excel moves the chart so that everything is visible without overlapping. However, there may be times when you need to correct the position of your existing chart for some reason. In this case, you can perform the following steps.

How to Lock the position of a chart in Excel

Open the Microsoft Excel 2010 worksheet that contains your chart. Click and hold the mouse button on any edge of the chart, drag it to where you want the chart to be and release the mouse button.

Click on the “Review” tab at the top of the screen. Click on the “Protect Sheet” button button located in the Changes area of the ribbon. A small window called “Protect Sheet” will appear.

Place your cursor in the text box at the top of the window and enter a password if desired. Anyone who wants to move the chart will need the password to first unlock the sheet. You can still lock the sheet if you choose not to enter a password, but anyone can unlock the sheet just by clicking “Unprotect Sheet” button.

Place check marks next to each item listed in the Protect Sheet window, except “Edit Objects”. Click “OK” to close the window and the graph will be locked in place.
