How to Turn off IPv6 on Windows 10 PC – Guide

When deploying a VM application, sometimes not all applications use the IPv6 network protocol, and depending on your environment, you may need to update a network adapter to temporarily disable IPv6. Windows 10 has built-in support for the IPv6 protocol. If your ISP provides IPv6 service, you can use it on Windows 10 without any additional setup or hassle. Although IPv6 support is increasing every day, it is still not as extensive as IPv4. In fact, most internet services only work with IPv4. Therefore, IPv6 built into Windows 10 can, under certain circumstances, cause compatibility issues with installed software or hardware that only works with IPv4.

At its launch, IPv6 should eliminate the world’s insatiable appetite for more IPs. However, IPv6 adoption has been slow and some choose to disable IPv6 in Windows for troubleshooting purposes. This is intended to be a workaround for some issues that others have encountered while setting up a virtual switch for use with a HyperV virtual machine. I wouldn’t recommend doing this in production on a Windows server. This is primarily intended to be used for development and PoC purposes.

How to disable IPv6 in Windows 10

You can disable IPv6 directly in the network adapter settings in the Network and Sharing Center in the control panel. Here are the steps.

Open Control Panel in Windows 10.

After opening the control panel, set the “View by” in the upper right corner to “Large icons”.

Click on the “Network and Sharing Center” option.

Here, click on the “Change adapter settings” link on the left panel.

Now, right-click on the active network adapter and select “Properties“.

Go to the “Network” tab.

Here, uncheck the “Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)” option.

Click on the “Ok” button button to save the changes.

Close network connections and the network and sharing center windows.

PowerShell command to disable IPv6

IPv6 on Windows can also be disabled using a PowerShell command. Here is the PowerShell command to disable IPv6.

Open the Start menu.

Type “PowerShell“, right click on the result and select “Run as administrator“.

After opening PowerShell window as administrator, run this command to get all IPv6 enabled network adapter names.

Get-NetAdapterBinding -ComponentID ms_tcpip6

Then run the below command to disable IPv6 on a specific network adapter. Replace “NetAdapterName” with the actual name of the network adapter you got with the previous command.

Disable-NetAdapterBinding -Name “NetAdapterName” -ComponentID ms_tcpip6

(Optional) To disable IPv6 on all network adapters, use the PowerShell command below.

Disable-NetAdapterBinding -Name “*” -ComponentID ms_tcpip6

Close the PowerShell window.
