However, there will come a time when you will need to remove a mapped network drive because you no longer need it, because your network settings have changed, or because you need to disconnect and reconnect to fix a mapping issue.

Whatever the reason, Windows 10/11 offers the ability to map and unmap a network drive through File Explorer, the command prompt, and even the registry. In this article, you will learn several ways to remove a network drive in Windows 10/11.

How to Delete Network Drive in Windows 11/10

How to delete a mapped network drive from Windows 10 using File Explorer

If you are using Windows 10 and need to delete a previously created drive mapping, the first thing to do is open File Explorer. Then, on the left side of the window, select This PC. All mapped drives are available in the Network Locations group, below your solid state drive, hard drives, and other similar devices such as CD/DVD drives or USB memory sticks.

To delete a drive mapping towards a network location, right-click (or press and hold) it and select Disconnect.

To remove a drive mapping for a network folder or FTP site, select it and press Delete on your keyboard. Alternatively, you can also right-click (or press and hold) and choose Delete from the context menu.

How to delete a mapped network drive from Windows 11 using File Explorer

The steps to remove a network drive from Windows 11 using File Explorer are similar to Windows 10. Start by opening File Explorer (Windows + E), and in the left navigation section of the window, select This PC. You will then see all your mapped network drives listed under Network Places.

To unmap a Windows 11 network drive, select it, click or tap the … (See More) button on the top toolbar and press “Disconnect Network Drive” from the displayed menu.

Alternatively, you can also use File Explorer’s context menus to remove a network drive from Windows 11. First, right-click or long-press on the mapped network drive you want to disconnect and select “Show More options”.

Then from the expanded context menu shown, select Disconnect to remove the mapped network drive.

If what you wanted was to delete a network location mapped to a network folder or FTP site, things couldn’t be simpler. Select it and press Delete on your keyboard or the Delete button button on the top toolbar of File Explorer. Alternatively, you can also right-click (press and hold) the network location and click or tap Delete in the context menu.

After deleting a mapped drive or network location, File Explorer no longer displays it.

How to unmap a network drive in Command Prompt, PowerShell or Terminal with the command “net use /delete”

If you prefer command-line environments, you can use the net use command to delete mapped network drives. Net use works in Command Prompt, PowerShell and also in the new Terminal app, both on Windows 10 and Windows 11. Open the CMD or command line interface you like best and run this command:

For example, I had a drive mapping that I assigned the letter Z, so the command I needed to run to unmap the drive was:

After running the net use /delete command, you will be informed that the mapped drive has been successfully deleted and the network drive immediately disappears from File Explorer.

How to delete all mapped network drives with “net use /delete” command

If you have more than one mapped network drive configured and you want to delete them all at once, you can use the same net use command to disconnect them all at once. Open Powershell, Windows Terminal or launch Command Prompt and run the following command:

net usage * /delete

CMD (or, depending on what you’re using, Windows Terminal or PowerShell) shows all active network connections that will be dropped. It may also ask if you are sure you want to continue. Type Y if you do, or N if you don’t.

If you want to use net use to disconnect all mapped network drives and you want to force the process to continue without asking for any confirmation, add the /y parameter to the command, like this:

net usage * /delete /y
