Since a slow DNS server can unnecessarily slow down your internet connection or, in the worst case, cause you to be disconnected from the network, it is important to use a reliable and fast DNS server on your computer to ensure a stable connection. DNS (Domain Name System), as the name suggests, maps domain names to IP addresses, so you can use a name for a website like “google.com”, while all connected computers use an IP address to find the website you want to visit with your browser. This DNS function is made possible by DNS servers, which are computers that respond to DNS queries. In simple terms, DNS can be thought of as the phone book, which helps users remember names instead of complex sequences of numbers to access a website on the Internet.

How to Change DNS Server in Windows 11

First, open Settings by pressing Windows + i on the keyboard. You can also right-click the Start button button and select “Settings” from the menu that appears.

Under Settings, select “Network & Internet” from the sidebar.

In the Network and Internet settings, find the name of the Internet connection you want to change DNS servers for in the list (such as “Wi-Fi” or “Ethernet”) and click on it.

On the properties page for that network connection, choose “Hardware Properties”.

Then locate “DNS Server Assignment” and click the “Edit” button button beside him.

An “Edit DNS Settings” window will appear up. Using the drop-down menu, select “Manual”. Then enable IPv4 or IPv6 depending on the type of IP connection you want to modify. Most connections still use IPv4 by default, but some ISPs also require IPv6.

Underneath the IPv4 or IPv6 headers, enter the primary DNS server address in the “Preferred DNS” box (such as “8.8.8.8” and “8.8.4.4” for Google’s free DNS service). Below that, enter the secondary DNS server address in the “Alternate DNS” box.

If you want to use DNS over HTTPS, which encrypts your DNS requests for privacy and security, set “Preferred DNS Encryption” and “Alternate DNS Encryption” to “Encrypted Only (DNS over HTTPS)” using the drop-down boxes below the addresses DNS entered in the last step. Repeat this for IPv4 or IPv6 if necessary.

If you don’t know if your new DNS servers support encryption, it’s okay to leave DNS encryption set to “Unencrypted only”. When finished, click “Save” and the pop-up window will close.

On the Wi-Fi or Ethernet hardware properties page, you will see the DNS servers you just entered listed with their encryption status next to them.

Close the Settings app and you’re done. From now on, all internet traffic passing through the network adapter you modified will use the new DNS servers. If necessary, you can repeat these steps with an alternate network adapter (such as Ethernet, if you have already set up DNS address for Wi-Fi).
