Upgrading from a manual to an electric toothbrush can be helpful if you like having an automatic two-minute timer or like having power help you brush. After doing a lot of study, including talking to dentists and trying out a lot of different models, we found that the Oral-B Pro 1000 is the best electric toothbrush.
Even though it doesn’t have the most modern features compared to other rechargeable brushes, it has what experts say are the most important features: a built-in timer for two minutes and the ability to work with a wide range of replacement brush heads. All of this comes at a price that is easy on the wallet, making it a great choice for people who want good mouth care.

We suggest the Philips Sonicare 4100 if you want a brush with a head that vibrates back and forth instead of moving back and forth. The 4100 has a two-minute timer with quadrant pacing and a pressure monitor, just like the Pro 1000. It doesn’t have any extra features that haven’t been tested. The 4100 is much quieter than the Pro 1000, but unlike the Pro 1000, it stops brushing after two minutes instead of starting up again.
It also has a smaller selection of more expensive brush heads with fewer shapes and bristle textures than the Pro 1000. But the 4100 has two levels of strength, so you can choose between strong and stronger vibrations, and its battery lasts longer on a full charge than the Pro 1000’s. Since October 2021, any new 4100 only comes with a charging stand with a USB plug. Philips Sonicare will send customers a free two-prong plug adapter if they ask for one.

The Oral-B Pro 1000 Best Electric Toothbrush is compatible with almost all of the brand’s replacement brush heads. It has a built-in two-minute timer with helpful quadrant pacing to keep you on task (moving the brush around your mouth and cleaning all your teeth) for the suggested amount of time. It also has a monitor that tells you if you’re brushing too hard. The oscillating action of the brush was especially liked by our testers. It feels strong enough to do a good job of cleaning.
The Pro 1000 comes with a simple charging stand that just needs the brush to be dropped on a peg. When fully charged, it can be used for at least a week of twice-daily, two-minute brushing sessions before it needs to be charged again. This is the same as the other toothbrushes we tried in this price range and is enough for most people. The biggest problem is that it makes more noise than other brushes we’ve tried.
The Good
- 3D Cleaning technology for thorough plaque removal
- Pressure sensor to prevent excessive brushing force
- Reasonable battery life for regular use
- Two-minute timer for optimal brushing duration
- CrossAction brush head for effective cleaning
The Bad
- Limited brushing modes compared to more advanced models

At CES 2020, the Oral-B iO Best Electric Toothbrush wowed us with its 3D teeth tracking capabilities, magnetic drive, smart pressure sensor, LED indicator lights, and mouth quadrant sensors. When you consider all of this in conjunction with the experience provided by the Oral-B app, the term “smart brush” no longer seems adequate.
This Oral-B electric toothbrush is comparable to other Oral-B brushes; however, in comparison to the Oral-B Pro 1000, the bristles on this brush appeared to have a more gentle feel. This is a significant advantage for people who have gums that are sensitive, as is the real-time coaching that indicates whether or not you are brushing your teeth with excessive force. When compared to the Pro 1000, the engine in the Oral-B iO is noticeably more quiet.
The Good
- Advanced oscillating-rotating-pulsating technology for thorough cleaning
- Multiple brushing modes for personalized oral care
- Pressure sensor to prevent excessive brushing force
- Long battery life for extended use
- Two-minute timer for optimal brushing duration
- iO Ultimate Clean brush head for exceptional results
The Bad
- Higher price compared to entry-level models

The fact that Colgate’s The Hum is Best Electric Toothbrush intelligent without being pretentious was a major selling point for me. This toothbrush provides a conventional clean, a deep clean, and a sensitive clean mode, and it buzzes at you every 30 seconds to let you know when it’s time to move on to the next quadrant of your mouth. Both the charger and the carrying case, which has enough room for two brush heads, are compact and convenient for traveling with. If you are tired of constantly having to replace the batteries in your brush, another option is to purchase one that is rechargeable.
The guided brushing option found within the app is one of the nicest features that this brush has to offer because it provides feedback on how well (or poorly) you are cleaning your teeth. When your app tells you that you missed brushing 20% of your mouth, it can be upsetting. However, it also offers encouragement and reminds you that you can earn incentives for brushing your teeth more effectively. It’s possible that it sounds foolish, but the experience actually make me want to brush my teeth more thoroughly.
The Good
- Sonic Technology for efficient cleaning
- Multiple brushing modes for customized oral care
- Reasonable battery life for regular use
- Two-minute timer for optimal brushing duration
- Convenient click-on brush heads
The Bad
- Lacks a pressure sensor for monitoring brushing force

The Pro-Sys VarioSonic Best Electric Toothbrush has five different brush heads, all of which are “soft,” and five different ways to brush. Instead of being round and small, sonic brush heads are flat and long. Sonic toothbrushes vibrate more quickly than rotating brushes. Instead of moving in a circle, they move from side to side as they vibrate. Dentists I talked to didn’t think that sonic or rotating brush heads were better.
The different brushing styles and heads make it easy to find the most gentle way to brush your teeth while still getting them clean. The bristles on all five of the ProSys VarioSonic’s brush heads were the softest of all the brush heads I tried (though the very softest one might have been too soft). As someone with sensitive gums, I found the different brush heads and brushing modes to be even more helpful than a pressure gauge.
The Good
- Sonic Technology for efficient cleaning
- Multiple brushing modes for personalized oral care
- Pressure sensor to prevent excessive brushing force
- Long battery life for extended use
- Two-minute timer for optimal brushing duration
- Convenient click-on brush heads
The Bad
- Limited availability and less well-known brand compared to others
FAQs
A toothbrush that works with the help of an electric motor is called an electric toothbrush. It moves the bristle head back and forth or in a circle, making the brushing process automatic and effective.
A small engine is used to make the bristle head of an electric toothbrush move quickly. Plaque and other debris can be removed from the teeth and gums more effectively with these moves than with a toothbrush.
It has been found that electric toothbrushes are better at getting rid of plaque and reducing gum inflammation than hand toothbrushes. Electric toothbrushes also help you brush properly and clean your teeth well because they move automatically and have timers built in.
