Fix ‘ms-resource: Appname Error’ Issue in Windows 11 PC – Guide

Windows 11 has come a long way since its announcement, and beta versions seem to be getting more and more testers every day. Windows switched to UWP apps for its system and the Windows Store when Windows 10 was released. For the most part, this transition was very welcome, but UWP apps also bring their own bugs. A noticeable issue that occasionally pops up up during a windows update is the error “ms-resource:AppName”.

The error “ms-resource:AppName” in most cases refers to a problem with Explorer.exe and ShellExperienceHost.exe on your system. Sometimes this error is also caused by a faulty UWP app. This error occurs when the app doesn’t start as expected or Windows is forced to use a corrupt cache when listing your apps.

If the app doesn’t behave correctly, you’ll find the app with “ms-resource:AppName” as its name in most places, including the Start menu, taskbar, apps list, and more. However, if the explorer.exe and shellexperiencehost.exe processes are faulty, in most cases this error will only appear in the Start menu.

If the error occurred in the Start Menu

If you encounter a “ms-resource:Appname” error on the Start menu, follow these steps to avoid it.

  • Firstly press Windows + S fully and in the search box type Powershell and launch Windows Powershell option in the search result. Make sure you start it with administrative access.
  • Then, at the Powershell prompt, type the following command and press Enter.
  • Get-AppxPackage -all *HolographicFirstRun* | Remove-AppPackage -AllUsers
  • After running the command, you can save all your work and restart your system.
  • If your system has recently started, right click on the Start button button and select Task Manager from the context menu.
  • Inside the Task Manager, select the Details tab from the top horizontal menu, find ‘ShellExperienceHost.exe’ in the list and right-click on it. If you don’t find this process, you can select ‘StartMenuExperienceHost.exe’
  • Then click the End Process tab to close the process.
  • Select the Explorer.exe and StartMenuExperienceHost.exe process, right-click on it and select the End Process tab.
  • After closing the mentioned processes, click on the File in the upper left corner of the Task Manager.
  • There, select the option Run new task and click on the Browse button button at the Create New Task prompt.
  • In the address bar at the top of the Browse window, type or copy and paste the following directory,
  • %localappdata%PackagesMicrosoft.Windows.StartMenuExperienceHost_cw5n1h2txyewy
  • Now from the list select the TempState folder and delete it from the system.
  • If the prompt appears on the screen, click Yes.
  • Again, click on the File option in Task Manager and select Run new task.
  • At the Create New Task prompt, copy and paste the following filename and press Enter.
  • Explorer will now be restarted along with the StartMenuExperienceHost.exe process.
  • Finally, restart the system and check whether the problem is resolved or not.

    Repair the app:

    The most common and effective way to troubleshoot ‘ms-resource:Appname’ error in Windows 11 is to repair the problematic application. To do so, follow the steps below,

  • Firstly, press Windows + I simultaneously to open Settings and click on Applications option in the left panel menu.
  • Then click on Applications and features and in the application list window select the problematic application.
  • Now click on the three-dot menu next to the app and select Advanced Options from the drop-down menu.
  • In the newly opened window, click the Finish tab.
  • Then click on the Repair tab and let the repair process complete on its own.
  • Again go back to the application list window, this time select the Microsoft application from the list and click on the three dots button-> Advanced Options-> Finish-> Repair.

    • Reset the app:

    The app reset is a modified version of the fix. If repairing the app does not work correctly, users must reset the app. To do this, follow the instructions below,

  • Firstly, press Windows + I simultaneously to open Settings and click on Applications option in the left panel menu.
  • Then click on Applications and features and in the application list window select the problematic application.
  • Now click on the three-dot menu next to the app and select Advanced Options from the drop-down menu.
  • In the newly opened window, click the Finish tab.
  • Then click on the Reset tab; if the reset prompt appears, click the Reset tab to confirm the action.
  • Again, reset the Microsoft app as mentioned in the steps above.
  • Once this is done, restart the system and check if the issue is resolved or not.

    • Reinstall the app:

    Reinstalling the problematic app is another effective method used in Windows 11 to resolve the “ms-resource:Appname” error. By uninstalling and reinstalling said error can be removed; follow the steps below to reinstall the application in question.

  • Firstly press Windows + S completely and in the search box type Powershell and start Windows
  • Powershell option in search result. Make sure you start it with administrative access.
  • Then at the Powershell prompt, copy+paste or type the following command and press Enter.
  • Get-AppxPackage | Select Name, PackageFullName
  • Now, you will get a complete list of apps installed on your system, find and copy the full name of the problematic app from the list.
  • Now open Notepad and paste the package name and save it in a convenient location for future use.
  • Then you need to type or copy + paste the following command and press Enter. Here, replace ‘name’ with the package name you pasted into Notepad earlier.
  • Get-AppxPackage NAME | Remove-AppxPackage
  • Now the problematic app will be removed from your system; once done, restart the system.
  • After the system restarts, open Powershell again with administrative access. Then type or Copy and paste the following command and press Enter. Here also replace the ‘name’ with the name of the package you copied in Notepad earlier.
  • Add-AppxPackage -register “C:Program FilesWindowsAppsNAMEappxmanifest.xml” -DisableDevelopmentMode
  • Once this is done, restart the system and check if the same error is resolved or not.
