If your Windows 10 computer is running slowly, it may be time to tweak it. Or you may just need to remove all this new PC junkware using Microsoft’s Windows tool. However, it can also be something more serious that the software cannot fix.

If you find that your computer isn’t working as well as it should, or if you’re getting troubling error messages, it may be time to reset your computer to factory defaults. Before going to the nuclear option, be sure to go back up your files before the big reboot so you don’t miss a thing. Once everything is fixed, you can adjust your settings, reinstall your apps and migrate your files back.

How to factory reset in Windows 10

  • Select Settings from the Start menu. The start menu is located on the toolbar of your Windows 10 device. Simply click on the Windows icon in the lower left corner of your screen. You can also use the adjacent search bar; just type ‘settings’.
  • Select Updates and Security from the setup menu. After loading the settings menu up, select ‘Updates and security’ from the list of options. If you’re having trouble finding it, just use the search bar at the top of the window to find it easily.
  • Select Recovery from the Updates and Security Menu. Along the left side of the ‘Updates and Security’ menu, there will be several different tabs; ‘Recovery’ is what we need to select. If you’re having trouble identifying it, feel free to use the search bar at the top.
  • Click Get Started under Reboot this PC. Now that you’re on the ‘Recovery’ tab at the top of the window, you should see a heading marked ‘Reboot this PC’ and below that a small paragraph of text and a button labeled ‘Start’. Click here button.
  • Chosen to remove everything or keep files. You will now have a choice: ‘Remove All’ or ‘Keep My Files’. This is pretty self-explanatory, but essentially the former will wipe your entire device, while the latter will wipe your device, but preserve your personal files.
  • Decide whether you want to wipe the entire drive (if you selected ‘Remove All’ in the previous step). Selecting ‘Keep my files’ will start the reset process, so skip to the next step. If you select ‘Removed all’ you will be presented with an additional options screen. Here you can choose whether you just want to remove files from your device or completely wipe the drive. We recommend the second option if you want to completely reset the device.
  • Confirm that you want to reset. Before the process starts fully, Windows 10 will prompt final confirmation that you definitely want to reset your device. This is the point of no return, so make sure you want to clean the device before confirming.
  • Let the reset process finish. Now that you’ve chosen to reset your Windows 10 device, there’s nothing to do but wait for the process to complete. Depending on the type of reset you’ve chosen, as well as how much is stored on the device, this can take a while up to a few hours.
  • To define up your device again. Once the reset is complete, Windows 10 will automatically restart and from here on, the device should return to the state it was as new. Now you can configure it up again.
