Last month, Microsoft released its new operating system – Windows 11. Compared to Windows 10, Windows 11 has a more refined and fresh look features. Also, the latest version of Windows 11 brings a brand new file explorer.
If you’ve used Windows 10 before, you should know that file explorer has the ability to hide / show files. You can easily hide or unhide files in Windows 10’s View menu. However, as Windows 11 has a new file explorer, the option to show hidden files and folders has been changed.
It’s not that the option to show hidden files and folders doesn’t exist in Windows 11, but it’s not the same anymore. So if you can’t find the hidden files and folders option in Windows 11, you’re reading the right article.
Showing hidden files and folders in Windows 11
To get started, we’ll use the File Explorer options.
1. Open File Explorer from the Start Menu or Taskbar.
2. On the top panel containing all settings, click the 3-dot icon and click Options.
3. Then click the View tab and navigate to Hidden files and folders under Files and folders.
4. There you will have to click on the Show hidden files, folders and drives option.
5. Finally, click OK button and close the window.
This will enable the regular hidden files stored on your system. However, the operating system or hidden system files will still not be displayed. To do this, you need to proceed with the following:
1. First, open File Explorer from Start Menu or Taskbar.
2. In the top panel containing all settings, click the 3-dot icon and click Options
3. Then click the View tab and navigate to Hidden files and folders under Files and folders.
4. On the tab, uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option.
5. Finally, click OK and close the window.
Consequently, all hidden files and folders, including system ones, will be shown in the File Explorer. If you want to revert all settings made there, just uncheck “Hide protected operating system files” and choose “Don’t show hidden files, folders and drives” option.
