Customizing the Registry Editor Context Menu

  • Press the “Win ​​​​+R” keyboard keys, in the “Run” utility type “regedit” and click “Ok”.
  • In “Registry Editor”, click the arrow next to the “HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT” folder.
  • Let’s say you want to remove an item from the context menu, such as “Open with”. Expand the folder path “*> shellex > ContextMenuHandlers”.

  • Rename the subkey to “Command”.
  • Click on the created subkey and in the right side panel double click on “(Default)” to add the command.
  • In the “Value data” textbox, type the command you want the item to run, such as the path and name of a program it will run (in this case the path to Chrome) and add the name of the executable file in final of the command.
  • Close the registry editor and then right-click on a file to confirm that the new entry, “Chrome”, is displayed in the context menu.
  • If you click on it, the Google Chrome browser will open.

    • Add or Remove Item in Context Menu “Send to”

  • You can add or remove an item from the “Send to” menu options.
  • Open “Run” by pressing the “Win ​​​​+R” keys on your keyboard, type “shell: send to” and click “Ok”.
  • Right click on an empty space and go to “New” among the options. Here you have the option to add a program, a new folder or a shortcut to an application or folder.
  • You can add an option to send a file to a specific contact. Select “Contact”, add the contact and enter the details and click “Ok”.
  • The new item will be added to the “Send to” menu.

    • Customize using third-party context menu editors

    Using “Registry Editor” can be difficult as you need to know the specific key for a particular menu item or the command for the item you need to add. Another simple way is to use trusted third-party menu editors for Windows 10. Many free context menu editors allow you to view and edit the items in the menu.
