How to Alter the Color of a Object on Photoshop – Guide

Adobe Photoshop is image editing and photo retouching software that can be used on Windows or macOS computers. Photoshop gives users the ability to create, enhance, or edit images, artwork, and illustrations. Adobe Photoshop lets you change backgrounds, simulate a real painting, or create an alternate view of the universe. It is the most used software tool for photo editing, image manipulation and retouching for various image and video file formats.

Photoshop tools can be used to edit single images and large stacks of photos. Sometimes you have a seemingly perfect photo, but something is wrong: the color doesn’t match everything else and you want to change it. But how can you do that without affecting the color of the rest of the image? In this simple article, you will learn how to use the Object Selection tool and mask layers in Photoshop to change the color of a single object in an image.

How to Change the Color of an Object in Photoshop

  • Selecting the object from the rest of the image is normally the most tedious part of the color change process, but Photoshop’s new object selection tool makes it simple. (The tool is available in Photoshop version 21.0, so make sure your software is up to date.) On the toolbar, select the Object Selection Tool. It’s located with the Magic Selection Wand — tap and hold the icon to change the selection tool to Object Selection.
  • Now, draw a box around the object you want to adjust. Make sure that the entire object is inside the box; you will get the best results if you draw the box tightly around the object. Photoshop will do its magic to detect the edges. You can refine the selection by holding the Shift key and drawing another box to add to the selection or the Alt/Option key to subtract from the selection. In the example image, I held the option key and drew around the green leaf overlapping the flower to deselect it.

    • Adjust the color using a hue/saturation adjustment layer

  • With those ants still marching around the object, go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Hue/Saturation. This creates a layer to adjust the object’s color.
  • In the Adjustment Layer Properties box, drag the hue slider to start changing the object’s color. (The box should automatically pop up after you create your adjustment layer, but if not, click the top icon in the right sidebar that has a cube in it.) Play around with the hue slider until you find a color you like.
  • Then adjust the saturation and lightness if desired. Saturation will increase or decrease the intensity or amount of color, while lightness will lighten or darken the selected area.

    • Refine selection with brushes

  • Adjusting the object’s color can make even small errors in the original selection more obvious. To improve the color change process, use Brushes to refine the adjustment layer. This process can eliminate the halo that is sometimes created by changing the object’s color.
  • On an adjustment layer, if you click the Black and White Mask icon on the Adjustment Layer icon, you can refine what is included in that adjustment, using white to include those pixels and black to exclude them. Select the Paintbrush tool and press D on your keyboard to change the foreground and background colors to black and white. Use a white brush to paint the parts of the object that you missed in the original selection; use a black brush to brush over the parts that shouldn’t have been selected. To correct small halos on the edge, use a brush with soft edges. You can change the brush type and size in the top panel.
  • When you’re done adjusting the color, you can continue adjusting the rest of the image. With an adjustment layer, you can always go back and use the hue slider again to make more adjustments – just select the Adjustment Layer in the Layers Panel.
  • When finished, save your image. A JPEG is easy to share, but if you want to go back and refine that color even further, save a PSD file as well.
