How to Assign Files to Correct Programs or Apps – Guide
The best example for me is Microsoft’s Reader app for reading PDF files. I prefer to use Adobe Acrobat (or Adobe Reader if I’m using a computer that doesn’t have Acrobat installed) to read PDF files because I’m more familiar with it. And while I can just open Acrobat and search for the PDF file I want to read/edit, there are cases where I simply double-click a PDF file to open it, such as when I get a PDF attachment in an email or through of a link on a website.
When I used to do this, Acrobat would open automatically, but after I installed Windows 8 and 10, the Microsoft Reader application would open. This application also opened automatically when I created a PDF from another program like Word. And it’s not just the Reader. Most defaults are set to built-in Microsoft apps rather than third-party programs you might prefer, like Edge browser over Firefox, Chrome, Safari, etc. And that happens even with standalone Microsoft programs – I use Outlook for email, for example, but the default for Windows 10 is the Mail app.
