How to Build A Custom Linux Single Board Computer Just To Play Spotify – Guide
if you want to hook up an existing stereo or amplifier for Spotify, there are some options on the market. You can even order a Raspberry Pi and that’s it. [Evan Hailey] went its own way, however, and built its own Spotify box from scratch.
Housed inside a neat little wooden box of its own creation, Spotify Box can turn any amplifier into a remotely controlled Spotify player via Spotify Connect. Choose the songs on your smartphone and they will be played in Spotify Box in a simple way.
The design is based on the Allwinner V3S, an on-chip system with a 1.2GHz ARM-Cortex-A7 core, 64MB of DDR2 RAM and an Ethernet transceiver for good measure. There is also a built-in high quality audio codec, making it perfect for this application. It is played on a four-layer PCB of [Evan’s] own design and paired with a Wi-Fi and BlueTooth transceiver, RJ-45 and RCA connectors, a push-button and some LEDs. There is also an SD card for storage.
With a custom fabricated Linux installation up using Buildroot, [Evan] was able to get a barebones system running Spotifyd while communicating with the network. Once that was done, it was as simple as hooking up Spotify’s box on an amplifier and playing some music.
By the way, [Evan] learned all about how to compile drivers and work with embedded Linux as well as how to take an empty SoC and turn it into a fully functional single board computer. When someone says they “made” a Spotify player, he probably clears his throat.
