How to Clean Your Printer’s Print Head in Windows 11 – Guide
Printheads regularly clog when small amounts of ink or dust dry up and get stuck in the mouthpiece. Faded prints, streaks, or smudges are all common signs of clogging, but a simple cleaning can often get your HP ink cartridges working again. The clogging of the print heads is due to irregular cartridge usage. If you go a few weeks without printing anything periodically, your cartridges will dry out and need to be replaced. Cleaning the print head can extend cartridge life and, hopefully, delay your replacement cartridge purchase! Here, we’ll explain the best way to keep the printhead clean.

Cleaning the print head button is usually accessible from the maintenance settings in printing preferences, which can be accessed from the Windows 11 settings. Below is a detailed walkthrough guide about how to access the printhead cleaning option in Windows 11 (for most printers).
- Press the Win + i keys to open the settings.
- In the left pane, click Bluetooth & Devices.
- Then select Printers and Scanners.
- From the list of printers, select the printer whose head you want to clean.
- Then click Printing Preferences.
- In the printing preferences window, click the Maintenance tab.

- Depending on the printer you have, you may be asked to select the ink group you want to clean. Select an ink group and click Run to continue. If you are not sure which ink group to clean, run a nozzle check first.
- You will then be guided through a series of on-screen instructions to complete the printhead cleaning.
The printer used in the guide above is a Canon MG2500 series printer. As for printers from other brands, such as Epson and HP printers, although the settings may look different depending on the printer you have, the printhead cleaning option can usually be found in the same settings window – Printing Preferences > Maintenance.
Note that not all printers have the printhead cleaning function, but most modern printers do. if there isn’t button or anything related to cleaning the printhead on the Maintenance tab in the printer’s printing preferences, might indicate that the printer does not have the feature.
Also, different printers may have different printhead cleaning options, which work differently depending on the printers. For example, Canon MG2500 series has both casual and deep cleaning options for print head cleaning, while my Epson WF-2630 has only head cleaning option.
