How to Convert a PowerPoint to Google Slides – Guide

You will learn two ways to convert PowerPoint to Google Slides to get the most out of Google Slides online platform. Google Slides is the second most popular program for creating and delivering presentations after Microsoft PowerPoint. And while some people prefer one program over the other, I recommend choosing the program your client or project team is using when deciding which program to use. And while it’s easy to convert between PowerPoint and Google Slides, it’s important to remember that not all of your presentation’s content will convert correctly (as discussed below). For this reason, I recommend using (and maintaining) whatever software program your team and/or clients feel most comfortable with.

Another way to upload PowerPoint to Google Drive is to simply click and drag it to the Google Drive folder as shown below. This can be faster if you already have the file folder open on your computer rather than browsing there from Google Drive.

Convert a PowerPoint by uploading to Google Slides

  • You can upload a PowerPoint presentation directly to the Google Slides website. From there, open it in Slides, make your changes, and it will automatically save.
  • Go to Google Slides, log in and click “Blank” under Start a new presentation on the main page.
  • When the blank presentation opens, click File > Open from the menu.
  • in the pop-up window, select the Load tab. Then drag your PPTX file into the window or click “Select a file from your device”.
  • You will immediately see the slideshow open in Google Slides as your active presentation. The slideshow name is the name of the PowerPoint file. You can change it if you like by clicking on that text in the upper left corner.
  • From there, you are ready to edit or present your slideshow. Since all changes are automatically saved, you don’t need to take an extra step to save your presentation as a Google Slides file.
  • You can visit the main Google Slides page to see your presentation listed. You can also access your presentation in Google Drive.

    • Convert PowerPoint by importing into Google Slides

  • Another way to convert your PowerPoint presentation to Google Slides is by importing it. The advantage of this method is that you can select the slides you want to convert if you don’t want the entire presentation.
  • Select “Blank” on the Google Slides main screen. When the untitled presentation opens, click File > Import Slides from the menu.
  • Select the Upload tab. Drag your PowerPoint slideshow file into the window or click “Select a file from your device” to browse, select and open the file.
  • When the Import Slides window appears, click on each slide you want to use in Google Slides. If you want to use all of them, click “All” next to Select Slides in the top right.
  • Optionally, check the box in the lower right corner to keep the presentation’s original theme. Then, with the slides selected, click on “Import Slides”.
  • When the slides you have chosen open in the blank presentation, click on the name in the upper left corner to rename it. By default, the slideshow will be called Untitled Presentation.
  • Your changes are automatically saved and you can access your converted presentation from the main Google Slides page or Google Drive.

    • Convert PowerPoint by uploading to Google Drive

  • One more way to convert a PowerPoint to Google Slides is to upload the file to Google Drive. This method may be more convenient if you already have Google Drive open.
  • On the Google Drive main page, click “New” in the upper left corner and choose “Upload file”.
  • Locate and select the PowerPoint file and click “Open.”
  • After the file has been uploaded to Google Drive, right-click and choose Open With > Google Slides.
  • The presentation will open in Google Slides, but it will still be a PowerPoint file, as you can see next to the name in the upper left corner.
  • Click File > Save As Google Slides in the menu to convert it.
  • This will open the presentation in a new tab as a Google Slides file. As described above, any changes you make will be automatically saved, but now as a Google Slides presentation. And you will see both files in your Google Drive.
  • If you want to remove the PowerPoint file from your Google Drive after converting it, then right-click and choose “Remove”.
