When it comes to technology, updates are a fact of life, whether it’s your operating system, your apps, or your hardware devices. One of the most common hardware components that users want/need to upgrade is the local hard drive. Reasons include limited storage space, better performance, and the ability to leverage features like UEFI or support for GPT disks. Upgrading to a new SSD hard drive, for example, can extend the life of a desktop or laptop PC for many years. I know I’ve done this a few times.

A bootable clone is an exact copy of all files (visible and invisible) on a drive of your computer, including the operating system, the system reserved partition/EFI system partition, installed programs, and other files. Now you might wonder why you should create a bootable clone in Windows 10/11 and what can a bootable clone do for you? Here you will learn how to create a bootable clone of Windows 10 drive.

How to Create a Bootable Clone of Windows 10 Drive

Create Clonezilla Live Disk

  • Download Clonezilla. Get the version called “stable” with a sequence of numbers after it.
  • On the next screen, change the file type from “.zip” to “.iso”. Unless you know you need a 32-bit version of the software, you can leave the CPU architecture as “amd64”. Leave the repository set to “automatic”. Then click on “Download”.
  • Insert a blank CD or DVD into your disc drive.
  • Navigate to the downloaded ISO file in Windows Explorer. Right-click the file and choose “Burn Disc Image” from the context menu.
  • Confirm the correct disk drive is selected and click “Burn” to burn a bootable version of the ISO to disk.

    • Boot into Clonezilla Live

  • Make sure the source and destination hard drives are connected to the computer.
  • Restart the computer.
  • After you hear the single beep to indicate the POST has completed successfully, you will see the BIOS splash screen. At this point, press the F12 or DEL key (depending on your BIOS) to choose a boot disk. If you’re not sure what to press, look for an option on the screen that says something like “Boot Menu”.
  • Select your DVD drive from the resulting menu.

    • Launch Clonezilla Live

  • Once Clonezilla Live starts, you will see a splash screen. Leave the default and press “Enter” on your keyboard.
  • You will see white text indicating that Clonezilla is starting up. When finished, choose the appropriate language.
  • Leave the default selection (“Do not touch keymap”) and press Enter on your keyboard to select.
  • A little more white text will pass. When you see a blue and gray screen again, press Enter to choose “Start Clonezilla”.

    • To define Up disk cloning

    Now that we’ve initialized everything, we’re ready to clone our disks.

  • On the next screen, use the down arrow on your keyboard to select “device-device”. This allows you to clone from one physical hard drive to another physical hard drive.
  • Press the Enter key to choose “Beginner Mode”, which is the default.
  • On the next screen, leave the default selection of “disk_to_local_disk” and press Enter. This setting allows you to clone a hard-attached disk to another hard-attached disk. The other options let you clone to network connected disks or work with partitions.
  • Select the source disk and press Enter. I’m using a virtual machine to capture screenshots so you can see more disks. Your menu will also show different names and capabilities. Since the names you applied in Windows will normally not be visible here, pay close attention to the disk capacity and mount point.
  • Select the destination disk and press Enter. Again, you can see more hard drives here.
  • Leave the default option to skip checking or repairing the source file system and press Enter.
  • Press Enter again to actually start the cloning process.

    • Run cloning process

  • Clonezilla will ask you to confirm that you want to clone the disks, erasing the target disk in the process. Make sure everything is correct before typing “y” and pressing Enter.
  • Clonezilla really wants you to be sure. Confirm your choices again, type “y” and press Enter.
  • You will see Clonezilla create the partition table on the target disk.
  • When prompted, type “y” and press Enter to confirm that you want to clone the bootloader to the target drive. The bootloader is what allows the computer to boot from a disk; without the bootloader, the drive will not be bootable.
  • Finally, the cloning process really begins! Keep an eye on the progress bars to see how long it will take.
  • When finished, Clonezilla will run some self-checks on the cloned drive. Press Enter to continue when prompted.
  • In the next menu, press Enter to shut down the machine.
  • After a five second countdown, Clonezilla will stop and the machine should shut down. If your computer doesn’t turn off by itself, you can turn it off manually after you see the line that says [info] Now it will stop. You finished!
