How To Create CSV File – Guide
Comma Separated Values (CSV) files are simplified versions of the type of spreadsheet you create with Excel and similar software. However, if you are trying to share data with people who use different operating systems or programs, the CSV format is a big advantage because most programs can read it easily. In short, CSV files do what the name suggests: they contain values on one line separated by commas (which indicate columns) and different lines appear on different lines. You can create a CSV file using programs like Excel, Google Sheets and OpenOffice Calc, as well as simple word processors like Notepad.
In a spreadsheet program such as Excel, Numbers or Google Sheets.
If you’re working with data in a tabular format, such as a spreadsheet, you might want to save it as CSV (read why programs use CSV here!). In that case, you don’t need to do anything with the data itself. Instead, just use the “Save As” and “.CSV” options (just like you would if you want to save to “.XLS” or “.TXT” and so on). This will save your file in CSV format. Likewise, you can also use “Export to” or “Download” and “.CSV” option to do the same, to save a copy of the file on your computer in CSV format.
As the data is already tabular, by choosing the “CSV” option, you are telling the program to separate the data columns by commas, and it does this automatically.
Using a text editor program (such as Notepad or Text Editing, etc.)
While it’s not that common, you may be working with a small amount of data and prefer to keep it organized in a text editing program. This comes down to two steps:
Be sure to use commas to structure your data within the text editor (each comma will represent a new “column” of data if you view it in tabular form
Again use “Save As” to select “CSV” from the list of options. Depending on the program you are using, you may need to type the actual extension into your filename, such as “file.CSV”, or simply save it as a “plain text file”. When you open this simple text in a spreadsheet program, you will see it in a tabular form like this
For those who create CSVs from apps
This is probably the simplest of all methods. It is also most common if you are using CSV files to move data into/out of apps. If you want to download a CSV of an application you use, it is highly likely that this is already the default method for downloading data – otherwise you should have the option to select it from a list of options.
If you’re overwhelmed with an application or program that doesn’t offer the option to save and/or export to CSV, you may come across some additional steps or third-party tools to convert the file type to CSV. More about this in the next section!
