How to Download and Install Kodi on RetroPie – Guide
Kodi is one of the most versatile media hubs and one of the best things about it is that it is easy to install anywhere thanks to its light weight. In the past we showed you how to install Kodi on the Raspberry Pi to create a $35 home entertainment system. But our original guide assumed you would use your Pi just like a Kodi calculator, which not everyone’s Raspberry Pi uses. That’s why this time we’re going to show you how to combine Kodi with the RetroPie project and get Kodi in RetroPie.
RetroPie is a popular Raspberry Pi operating system that turns your Raspberry Pi into an emulator that uses Emulation Station as its graphical interface, and RetroArch, a program that runs multiple emulators to play your ROMs. It’s a great project and we can only recommend it. But adding Kodi makes the existing project even cooler and gives you a single device that can double as a gaming system and media center PC – all for the ridiculously low price of a $35 Raspberry Pi.
Go to the RetroPie main menu. You can get there via the same horizontal menu where all your emulators are listed. Just look for the RetroPie logo with the big red joystick on it.
Once in the main menu, scroll down to the “PORTRAIT SETUP” option in the menu. You will see a gray box on a blue screen with a few different configuration options.
Select “Manage packages”
The desired option is “Manage packages”. It is the third option in the short list in this screenshot. Go ahead and select it. You will see another menu on a similar looking screen, this time listing a few different options related to the package.
Select “Manage optional packages”
Kodi is optional in RetroPie, so click “Manage optional packages”. Let’s get a chance here to choose Kodi and download the optional Kodi package for RetroPie.
Select Kodi
The options are numbered on this screen, and our friend Kodi is number 308. Scroll down and select it.
Choose “Install from Binary”
You have two options here – “install” and “help”. You don’t need help to know how to install Kodi on RetroPie or whatever Kodi is, of course, because you have our handy tips right here on The Pi and on our sister site Cordcutting.com. What additional help do you need? So go ahead and click “Install from Binary”.
You will now see a lot of text on the screen. What’s happening here is that the Raspberry Pi is downloading Kodi and installing it. You remembered making sure you were connected to the internet, right? If you have problems with this step, check your Internet connection again.
Reset your RetroPie
Kodi will be available the next time you boot up your system, but not before. So go ahead and restart your RetroPie! You can choose Main Menu > Exit > Restart Emulation Station, or simply press the power button or disconnect.
You’ll find Kodi in the “Ports” section of that familiar horizontal menu. We believe that it was not very difficult to learn how to install Kodi on RetroPie!
