How to Enable Swipe Controls for Brightness and Volume in YouTube – Guide

YouTube has some basic gestures: you can double tap each half of the video to fast forward or rewind ten seconds, and swipe down to minimize the video. But wouldn’t it make more sense to use gestures to control brightness and volume? Well, as with all things Android, where there’s a will, there’s a way. A modified version of YouTube called YouTube Vanced gives you access to a host of new features, from custom themes to full resolution control. Another advantage of Vanced is that you can swipe up and down the left half of any video to change the brightness or the right half to change the volume.

Swiping down minimizes the video and swiping up full screen shows related videos. Swiping down to minimize a video helps on iOS devices, but on Android you already have a turn button to do this, which is also easier to achieve. It would make more sense if you could control volume and brightness with swipe gestures. Of these, YouTube Vanced is probably the most feature-rich. After installing and running YouTube Vanced, launch the app and tap the profile icon at the top right. From here, go to Settings and select Advanced Settings at the bottom. Under Advanced Settings on the next page, select and enable Swipe Controls. You can control swipe sensitivity with the other two options here. Swiping Threshold controls how far you have to swipe up or down before the gesture is recognized by the app.

Swipe Predding (above) lets you add a gesture-free area at a certain height from the top of the screen. This ensures that YouTube Vanced gestures don’t interfere with the notification gesture, which also works with a swipe down from the top of the screen. After enabling YouTube gesture controls for video brightness and volume on an Android device, you can swipe up or down the left half of a video to increase or decrease the volume. First open the Play Store and install Touch Controls for Youtube.
