Most Android smartphones have a system default setting to enable dark mode, but many apps available on the Play Store still do not support this. feature. Dark mode helps with a feeling many people are familiar with: after hours of staring at the screen, eyes get tired and the white background of almost every website and app can be blinding no matter how much you turn the brightness down.

Currently, there are several apps on Android that support dark mode or a dark theme. However, there are some that have been in the queue for a long time, such as WhatsApp and Facebook. How to force all apps to use dark mode on android

Enable Developer Options and USB Debugging

  • Before we start working on DarQ, we need to make sure that your phone is ready to use it correctly. If you’re 100% sure you’ve already done this, go to Step 2.
  • First we need to make sure Developer Options are enabled as it is required for both ADB and “Override force-dark”. The exact process for doing this varies from phone for phone, but here is the short version. Scour the Settings app, find your phone’s “Build number” and tap it seven times. If Developer Options is already enabled, a helpful message will let you know when you tap on the build number.
  • This will add a new menu somewhere in Settings – usually System > Advanced – labeled “Developer Options”. Open this new menu and enable “USB Debugging”. That tells your phone to potentially allow a connection via ADB

    • Install DarQ and the necessary script

  • Once you have all the pieces in place, you are ready to install DarQ. As mentioned above, it is not available on the Play Store, but you can download the latest version of DarQ from APKMirror. Once downloaded, open the APK file on your phone to install or “load” it on your phone. Most likely, your phone will ask you to confirm that you want to install from “unknown sources”, but this is normal for anything downloaded outside of the Play Store.
  • Then, on your computer, go to the official DarQ development topic where you can click on the big option called “Download the script to run it without root using ADB”. This will download a small Zip file, go ahead and extract all your files into a new folder and note where you chose to extract to. You’ll need it again later.

    • Give Accessibility Access to DarQ Android

  • We are finally ready to open the DarQ app. On its first run, DarQ will ask you to grant Accessibility Service permissions. This is done to allow DarQ to respond faster to toggle “Override force-dark” for each app running on your phone but is technically optional.
  • To give permission, tap “OK” and you will be taken to the correct page of the Settings app. Under the “Downloaded services” heading, tap “DarQ”. On the next page, tap the “Use Service” button to activate it. You’ll get a pretty big warning from Android about what kind of information DarQ can have access to if you enable accessibility access. Tap “Allow” if you’re okay with this potential risk and go back to the app.

    • Start DarQ service from your computer

  • This is the most important step, and also this is the step you will need to repeat every time you restart your phone, to get DarQ back to work to force apps into dark mode. First, connect your phone on your computer. Then open the folder full of files that you extracted in step 2.
  • You will then need to run the included DarQ script to automatically connect your phone via ADB and allow DarQ to toggle “Override force-dark” at will. How you do this will depend on your computer’s operating system.
  • Windows: Double click on “rundarq-windows.bat”
  • Linux/Mac: Open the folder in your Terminal application and run “./rundarq-linux-mac.sh“.
  • Most likely, the script will fail on the first attempt as you will need to give your computer permission to connect. You will see a pop-up in your phone asking to “Allow USB debugging”. Tap “Allow” and run the script again.

    • Choose which apps should be forced to dim

  • Once the service is enabled, DarQ is ready to darken your apps at will. In the app, tap “Enabled apps” to access a list of the various apps installed on your phone. If you notice something missing from the list, tap the three-dot menu in the top right corner and check the “Show system apps” box.
  • Now select the apps that you think could really benefit from having a dark mode. From the next time you restart these apps, DarQ will automatically enable Android 10’s “Override force-dark” to darken them. For example, I found Google Play Music to be much more manageable with a dark theme, though not perfect.
