How to Install macOS Monterrey on your Mac – Guide

macOS 12 Monterrey is the name of Apple’s newest operating system, a further development of the current Big Sur platform that adds new features and optimizations to some of the Cupertino giant’s most popular applications and services. Apple released the macOS 12 Monterrey on Monday, October 25th. In that guide, we will guide you through the steps necessary to reinstall macOS Monterrey, including support up your existing files and creating a bootable USB flash drive to use to complete the installation.

How to clean installation of macOS using a bootable USB

Before starting, you will need the following:

A 15GB or larger removable USB flash drive to store the installer file for our chosen version of macOS. (We’ll delete it, so make sure it doesn’t contain valuable data.)

Administrator privileges for the Mac.

Back up, just in case something goes wrong. Complete instructions here: How to back up a Mac.

Note that in terms of backups, you probably don’t want to restore a Time Machine backup unless you want to copy all your settings and preferences from your old system. Alternatively, you can sync all your documents and desktop to iCloud instead of doing a full backup, but make sure everything you need is in the cloud and be aware that you can lose your system settings and apps.

format the external drive

Let’s redownload the installer file for the chosen version of macOS and store it on a pendrive or external drive. But before doing that, you can prepare the USB drive by reformatting it. Here it is how to format your USB drive correctly:

Connect the USB drive.

Go to Applications > Utilities.

Open Disk Utility.

Select the drive and click Delete. (Disk name needs to be “Untitled”, if the Terminal commands below work, then rename it if necessary.)

Select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format type.

Choose GUID Partition Map from the layout options.

Click Delete.

Disk Utility will create the partition and set up the drive (may take a while).

Click Done.

Get the macOS installation file

If you are reinstalling the latest version of macOS or installing a new version of macOS, the next step is relatively easy, although the process for obtaining the installer is different. If you are running Big Sur and want to do a clean install of macOS Monterey (once you arrive), you can download the installation package through System Preferences.

Get the installation file for an older version of macOS

Older versions of macOS and Mac OS X make it a little harder to get the install file: Apple doesn’t offer downloads of outdated OS versions through the regular store, and searching by name won’t find what you’re looking for . We have detailed instructions here about how to get older versions of macOS, but we’ll explain what you need to do next.

Depending on the macOS version you are using, you can find installers for some macOS versions in the “Purchased” section of the App Store. Log in to the Mac App Store with the Apple ID you used and click Purchased in the top menu bar. Search the list of apps you’ve purchased or downloaded for free (in order of when you downloaded them) and find the name of your chosen version: El Capitan, Yosemite, or whatever. Click on the Download button button.

However, there are a few reasons why this might not work for you:

If you’ve already installed Mojave, Catalina, or Big Sur on your Mac, you won’t be able to easily search for older versions of macOS in the Mac App Store.

You will not find the macOS version your Mac shipped with in the Purchased section of the App Store.

And you won’t find macOS versions in the shopping section if you’ve never installed that version.

However, luckily it is still possible to get some versions of macOS if you are running a newer version than Sierra.

Create a bootable USB disk

Next, we need to convert the USB drive to a bootable USB drive so that we can use it to install a fresh copy of macOS on our Mac after reformatting it (this step will come later in this tutorial) We have full instructions on how to create a bootable macOS installation unit in another article, but we’ll look at the basics here.

Let’s create the bootable drive with Terminal, which you can open on your Mac by pressing Command + Space and typing Terminal. Connect the previously formatted USB drive to your Mac. Make sure it says Untitled – rename it if necessary (this will help you get the correct text into Terminal in the next steps).

Creating a bootable installer has been pretty easy since the release of Mavericks in 2013, thanks to the createinstallmedia terminal command that arrived in this release. How to use it (note that the macOS version name depends on which version you are installing):

Open the Terminal app on your Mac (find it by searching using Command + Space and typing Terminal)

Now copy and paste the following text into Terminal (this text is for Big Sur – we’ve included the necessary text for the other macOS versions in this article). When cutting and pasting the following text into Terminal, make sure it keeps the – as we’ve heard from people pasting into – and converting to -) sudo / Applications / Install macOS Monterey.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia –Volume / Volumes / MyVolume (where MyVolume is the name of the external drive you are using – may be Untitled)

Press Return.

Enter your password (you will not see the password appear).

Press Return again.

Terminal will notify you that it is about to erase the drive. If you want to continue, press Y and then Return. The process may take a while, you will see “Erasing disk: 0%… 10%… 20%… 30%… 100%…

Next Terminal will take a few minutes to copy the installer file to your drive. “Copying installer files to disk… Copy complete” and so on will appear in the Terminal window. Again, this might take a while – our Mac age took it to go from 0% to 10%…

When the bootable drive is ready, you will see the word Completed. This can take a while.

Now that you have the installer on your external drive, you can use it to install copies of macOS on multiple Macs – which can be useful if you’re an administrator for multiple systems.

clean your mac

We are now ready to install the macOS copy of the installation drive on our Mac. If you want to do a fresh install (and completely clean your Mac), it’s time to reformat your Mac-start.up to drive. Here it is how to do a fresh install of macOS if you are not already running Catalina or Big Sur.

Plug in your boot drive.

To start up – or restart – your Mac while holding down the Option key (also known as Alt). This will take you to the Boot Manager.

Choose to install your chosen version of macOS from the external drive.

Select Disk Utility.

Select the start of your Mac up disk, probably called Macintosh HD or Home.

Click Delete.

Wait for the boot disk to format.

Go back to the Utilities main menu and choose Install macOS.

Choose your boot drive as the location to install macOS.
