How to Install Parrot OS in VirtualBox – Guide

How to Install Parrot OS in VirtualBox on Windows PCs

There are only 5 steps to go through here and they are:

  • Download and install VirtualBox
  • Download the Parrot Security .ISO file
  • Create a Parrot OS guest in VirtualBox
  • Install Parrot OS on VirtualBox
  • Install VirtualBox Guest Addition

    • Download and install VirtualBox

  • Go to the official Oracle VirtualBox website and download the latest version of VirtualBox for Windows hosts.
  • At the time of this writing, VirtualBox was at version 6.0.x. Yours may be different, but that’s okay.
  • Installing VirtualBox on Windows is as easy as installing any other application. Choose the default installation options and you should be fine.

    • Download the Parrot OS ISO file

    Go to the Parrot OS Security Edition download page and download the Parrot security 64-bit .iso file (Interface Mate).

    Create a Parrot OS guest in VirtualBox

  • Open VirtualBox and click “New” from the Tools menu.
  • Click on “Expert Mode” below the pop-up window.

    • Configure the guest OS with the details below:

  • Name: Give the virtual machine any name. I will call it Parrot OS 4.6.
  • Machine folder: I just leave it as it is.
  • Type: Linux
  • Version: Debian (64 bit)
  • But if yours only has 32-bit options and you are sure you have a 64-bit system, you will need to enable virtualization in your computer’s BIOS. Here is a quick video about how to fix this.
  • Memory Size: This is the amount of RAM that Parrot will run on. Anywhere within the green line will be fine. I’ll set this to 1024 MB. Allocate more RAM if desired.
  • Hard disk: Select Create a virtual hard disk now.
  • Click “Create” to proceed.
  • In the next pop-up window, leave the file location as it is and set the file size to at least 30 GB. This will give Parrot enough space to accommodate all the programs that come pre-installed on it, as well as those we’ll install later.
  • Leave the hard disk file type set to “VDI (VirtualBox Disk Image)” and Physical Hard Disk Storage set to “Dynamic Allocated”.
  • Click “Create” to save.
  • To complete this step, attach the Parrot OS .ISO file you downloaded for this newly created guest operating system. With the newly created guest OS selected, click on “Settings“.
  • No pop-up window, click “Storage” > “Empty” and click the disk icon and “Choose virtual optical disk file” as shown in the image below. After that, locate where the Parrot OS .ISO file downloaded on the computer is and select it.

    • Install Parrot Security OS on VirtualBox

  • You are now ready to install Parrot OS on your VirtualBox. Double-click to start the Parrot OS virtual machine.
  • In the first (boot) menu that comes up, scroll down with the arrow keys and press Enter to select “Install” -> “Install with GTK GUI“. I like using the GUI installer because it looks easier on the eyes somehow.
  • Now the next screens are just cosmetic settings and a matter of user preference. System Language Localization Keyboard language. Normally, I just press Enter to select the highlighted options, which work just fine. You can select your choice here.
  • Set a password for the ROOT account here. This is the highest password for this system, it’s like the Windows administrator password, so make sure you don’t forget it.
  • Now, let’s create a standard user for non-administrative (day-to-day) operations. Parrot OS is amazing for having this during setup. On Kali, you will do this manually after installation (that is, if you know how to do it). You can put your hacker ninja name here ????
  • Set up the clock. Another cosmetic setting. Set your time zone according to your preference.
  • Partition disks. We could go on to partition our virtual hard drive and have a separate partition for /home, / opt, etc. But using the entire disk without partitioning will work fine for our purposes, which by the way is recommended for new users.
  • Set up swap space? Say “No” to skip swap space setup. We won’t need this in our virtual machine. And select “Yes” on the next screen to save all changes to disks.
  • After saving the changes to disk, the system will begin to install. This will take some time to complete depending on the speed of your computer and also how much RAM you have allocated to the VM
  • Install the GRUB boot loader? Select “YES” and then select the only hard drive from the device we have, which is the 30GB virtual hard drive we created at the beginning.
  • Finishing the installation… This will take a little longer to finish, so be patient.
  • Your Parrot OS will automatically restart and take you to the login screen of your new ParrotSec virtual machine. Log in using the username and password you set for the default user you created during installation.
  • That’s it. Your Parrot OS is now ready to be used for hacker training. But before that, some household chores need to be done.

    • Install VirtualBox Guest Additions

  • VirtualBox Guest Additions helps your guest virtual machine have a closer integration with the host system. It adds a collection of drivers that enable essential functionality like full screen mode, clipboard sharing, drag and drop.
  • One of the many reasons I prefer Parrot OS over Kali is that most of the first things to do after installing Kali Linux are already taken care of. Therefore, you just need to update the system and install the VirtualBox guest additions.
  • To update the system, open a terminal and run the command below:
  • $ sudo apt update && apt upgrade -y
  • This will take a while to complete depending on how many updates you need to get. up about. Even if you downloaded the ISO file and installed it right away, you still have pending updates. Welcome to the world of Linux
  • Then run the command below to install the VirtualBox guest additions:
  • sudo apt install virtualbox-guest-x11
  • Now restart the system

    • Once the system is up and running, you can maximize the VM window and use Parrot in full screen mode.

    Finally, to enable shared clipboard and drag and drop file sharing between Guest and Host machines, go to VM Settings -> General. On the Advanced tab, enable both options (Shared Clipboard and Drag’n’Drop) as desired. But I like to define both as “Bidirectional”.
