How to install the Epic Games Launcher on the Steam Deck – Guide

There’s no doubt that the most effective way to utilize Valve’s latest gaming rig, the Steam Deck, is within the local SteamOS framework. It just finds a few ways to log into your Steam account (or create another one) and have instant access to your protruding game library, keeping (ideally) a comparably flawless job in a hurry. Now change the “File Types” dropdown to “All Files” and you should see Epic Installer in your folder. Click Open to add it to Steam’s list of non-Steam games, then click Add Selected Programs.

Search your library for “Epic” to find the installer. Right click and go to Properties > Compatibility and check the box that says “Force use of a Steam Play specific compatibility tool” and select the latest stable version of Proton.

Click Play to run the installer. It will take a minute or so and then disappear. You have successfully installed the Windows version of the Epic launcher within SteamOS. Now we just have to do it so you can actually use it.

This is the only step that is a bit of a pain: you need to find the folder in Steamapps where the Epic launcher was installed. Open the Dolphin file explorer from the taskbar and click the hamburger menu in the upper right corner to enable “Show hidden files”. Now navigate to the following path:

Home / .local / share / Steam / steamapps / compatdata

If you have multiple games installed, you will see a bundle of folders here with ID numbers that correspond to them. Hidden in one of these folders is the Epic Games executable. If you haven’t added any other non-Steam games, it should be pretty easy to find: the folder will be a much larger number than any official Steam game. Start with the highest numbered folder and keep opening the “pfx/drive_c/Program Files (x86)” folders until you find the one containing Epic Games. When doing so, navigate to this path:

Home / .local / share / Steam / steamapps / compatdata / [big folder number] / pfx / drive_c / Program Files (x86) / Epic Games / Launcher / Portal / Binaries / Win64

Find EpicGames Launcher.exe at the bottom of the folder. Right-click > Copy Location.

Back in Steam, right-click on the Epic installer entry in your library and go to Properties > Shortcut. Here you will highlight the Destination field, right-click and click Paste. Then use the keyboard (Steam+X) to re-add the quotes at the beginning and at the final.

Do the same for the “Start In” field, but delete EpicGamesLauncher.exe from the final, because we’re just telling Steam which folder to look in, here. Remember to keep the quotes at the beginning and at the final. (If you find it too cumbersome to copy/paste to Steam Deck trackpads, use the Browse here option to navigate to the folder.

Rename your EpicInstaller shortcut-[numbers].msi to something better. I just made “Epic Games”. (You can also add an icon, but it will not be displayed up in the SteamOS UI.)

Setup complete! (Well, mostly). Click the “Return to Gaming Mode” icon on the desktop to boot back into SteamOS.

Back on SteamOS, open your library and head over to the non-Steam games section, which should make your new Epic library easy to find. Select it and click on the controller icon to configure your controls. I recommend selecting the “Gamepad with Mouse Trackpad” template, enabling the back grip buttons and setting two handles for left/right clicking. That way you can still use the controller buttons normally when using the trackpad and grip buttons to navigate the Epic launcher UI.

Boot up the launcher and log into your account. It’s a little slow to load, so wait a minute or so. Once loaded, click your profile icon in the top right corner and open Settings. Disable the following:
