Once you’ve produced your ideal spreadsheet, you may hesitate to share it with others—after all, sticky fingertips indicate faded cells, which can destroy your carefully prepared calculations. Lock an entire sheet in Google Sheets

If you want to prevent an entire spreadsheet from being edited by others, you can lock everything.

To do this.

Open up the sheet you want to lock in Google Sheets and click Data > Protected Sheets and Ranges.

Click the Add a sheet or range option to start adding criteria to lock your sheet.

To start locking the entire sheet, select the Sheet tab.

Block specific cells in Google Sheets

There may be situations where you want to allow people to edit your spreadsheet, but you still want to protect specific cells. You might want to lock cells with complicated formulas, for example.

To do this, open the sheet you want to protect and highlight the cells you want to lock. If you want to protect unconnected cells, you will need to repeat these steps for each range.

With cells selected, right-click any of the selected cells and click Protect Range.

In the Protected Pages and Ranges panel, you can name your cell range. This will help you control whether you want to protect multiple ranges, but you can leave the name blank if you prefer.

Press Set Permissions to apply restrictions to selected cells.

As with page blocking, you can set user permissions in the next stage. If you have other cell ranges you want to protect, repeat the steps above.

Lock an entire sheet except for specific cells

If you have a large number of cells that you want to protect, leaving only a few unrestricted, you can lock the entire sheet except for a range of cells.

Click Data > Protected Sheets and Ranges to get started.

Click Add a sheet or range to select the range of cells.

Select the Sheet tab.

Press the Except certain cells checkbox to activate it.

You may find that this brings up the cell you currently highlighted in your spreadsheet.

If this is not one of the cells you want to leave unlocked, click the Select Data Range icon and select the range you want to use.

If you have multiple ranges that you want to leave unprotected, press the Add another range button and select additional cells.

When you are finished selecting your ranges, click OK to confirm and Set permissions button.

You can set user permissions in the next phase. Your sheet will then be protected, with the exception of the cells you selected.

Enable soft warnings for cell editing

If you don’t want to block cells, you can still give them a layer of protection by applying gentle warnings. Google Sheets will alert you if you plan to edit your cells, but won’t restrict you if you decide to continue.

Select your cell range and press Data > Protected Sheets and Ranges to begin. After choosing Range or Sheet, press Set Permissions.

In the range edit permissions window, choose Show a warning when editing this range.

Press Done to save.

With this warning applied, a pop-up The alert will appear whenever you try to edit a protected cell, asking if you want to edit it.

You can choose to turn off warnings for the next five minutes – press the Don’t show this again for 5 minutes checkbox if you want to enable this before pressing OK to make changes to the cell.
