How to Lock Notes in Apple Notes on Mac and iPhone – Guide

Apple Notes is a great note-taking app developed by Apple for Mac, iPhone and iPad. You can use Notes on your Mac to jot down your random thoughts, keep a journal, or even organize your financial information, etc. Some of your notes may be private and should be protected from prying eyes. Notes is the default note-taking app for many iPhone, iPad and Mac users. When using Notes, starting with iOS 15, you can not only jot down random notes and thoughts, but also take notes with checklists, images, web links, and documents scanned into them. As this means that you also sometimes use Apple Notes to store personal/sensitive information in your notes, it is advisable to protect your notes with a password.

Apple offers several ways to implement this in Notes: you can do this via a password, or you can use biometrics like Face ID or Touch ID if your device supports it. The Notes app has evolved a lot over the years. With each new software update, Notes has become a useful and resourceful note-taking application. This is even more true with the arrival of iOS 14 and iPadOS 14, which introduced a number of new features for ease of use. However, one of the best features is the ability to lock notes on iPhone or iPad. You don’t need an additional app to backup your notes and private information.

You can lock individual notes in Apple Notes app on iPhone and iPad using Lock Notes feature.

  • Open the “Notes” app and go to the notes list. Use Apple’s built-in Spotlight Search if you can’t find the app on your Home screen. Find the note you want to lock and swipe left on it.
  • Here, tap on the Block icon.
  • From the pop-up, enter your password. If this is the first time you are using the padlock feature, you will be prompted to create a password. When finished, tap “OK”.
  • The note will now be locked. You can tell by the lock icon on the left edge of the window.
  • When you tap on the note, the app informs you that the note is locked. From here, tap on “View Note”.
  • If you’ve enabled Face ID or Touch ID, you can authenticate using biometrics. Alternatively, you can enter your password.
  • Once the note is unlocked, you can edit it. You can go back, browse and come back to find that the note is still unlocked. If you exit the app and start it again, the note will be locked again.
  • You can also manually lock the note by tapping the “Lock” button button on the top toolbar.
  • If you want to remove the lock, tap on the Share button.
  • From iOS or iPadOS Share sheet, tap “Remove lock”. After a second, you will see a “Lock Removed” message and the padlock will disappear.
  • If you have a lot of notes, here’s a way to quickly filter only blocked notes. From within the Notes app, tap on the “Search” bar and choose the “Blocked Notes” filter.

  • If you’ve already created a Notes password on iPhone or iPad, you can use the same password to unlock Notes on Mac.
  • To lock a note on your Mac, open the “Notes” app and select the note you want to lock.
  • Now, on the top toolbar, click on the “Note” icon and from the drop-down menu, select the “Lock Note” option.
  • From the next pop-up, enter your Apple Notes password. If this is your first time using Lock Notes feature on your Mac, you will be prompted to create a password. When finished, click “OK”.
  • Although the note has been added to the blocked notes list, it will still not be blocked. In fact, if you go to another app and come back, you’ll see that the note is still unlocked and editable.
  • You will need to manually lock the note by clicking the “Lock” button button and selecting the option “Close all locked notes”.
  • Now when you select the note, the Notes app will inform you that it is locked. Enter your password and press “Return” to unlock the note.
  • If you want to remove the lock from a note, click on the “Note” button button in the toolbar and then select the “Remove Block” option.
  • To filter only blocked notes, click the “Search” bar on the top toolbar and select the “Blocked Notes” option from the suggested searches.
