This tutorial will show you how to change the default downloads folder location to save to in Chromium-based Microsoft Edge.
Changing the download folder through browser settings
The default and easiest method of changing the download directory is using browser settings. Microsoft has included an option for the download directory. Users can now change the download folder to any other folder on any drive. The interface is updated with each release, but the steps below will give you an idea on how to change the download directory in Microsoft Edge chromium.
- Open the Microsoft Edge browser by double-clicking on the shortcut or by searching for it in Windows search feature.
- Now click on Settings and more (three dots) and choose Settings from the list.
- Select Downloads in the left pane and click the Change button button.
- Now select any of the folders where you want to download the files.
Changing the download folder through Registry Editor
Registry Editor can be used to modify different types of application settings. Sometimes keys or values are missing for that particular setting and the user has to create them manually. A wrong registry setting can cause system problems. However, by following the steps below, you can safely configure the Microsoft Edge chromium download folder.
Note: We recommend that you create a backup of the Registry before making any changes.
- Press the Windows and R keys on your keyboard to open the Run dialog. Now type “regedit” and press the Enter key to open Registry Editor. Choose the Yes option for the UAC (User Account Control) prompt.
- In the Registry Editor window, you need to access the following key path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Policies Microsoft Edge
- If the Edge key is missing, create it by right-clicking on the Microsoft key and choosing New > Key. Rename the key as “Edge“.
- Now, right-click on the right panel of the Edge key and choose the New > String Value option. You need to rename this value as “DownloadDirectory“.
- Open the DownloadDirectory value and add the folder path in the value data.
- After making all these changes in Registry Editor, you must restart your computer to apply the changes.
Changing the download folder through the Local Group Policy Editor
The Local Group Policy Editor is another method by which you can configure this specific setting. Settings are now available here for Microsoft Edge. Users just need to open the setting and change the toggle option for that setting.
Check the paths for “Computer Configuration Administrative Templates Windows Components Microsoft Edge” or “User Configuration Administrative Templates Windows Components Microsoft Edge” in the Local Group Policy Editor. If the setting used in the method below is already available, use it and skip downloading new policy files.
- Open your browser and go to the Microsoft website, select your Microsoft Edge version details and click GET POLICY FILES to download.
- After downloading, extract the zip file using WinRAR or similar application.
- Open the extracted folder and navigate to “MicrosoftEdgePolicyTemplates windows admx“.
