OneDrive is a file hosting and synchronization service offered by Microsoft. It is an important tool on Windows, especially for those who want to synchronize files and folders. It also allows you to transfer files to cloud storage. In Windows 10, OneDrive is always displayed on the right side of the taskbar. The icon is the gateway to access OneDrive. Unfortunately, however, the OneDrive icon can sometimes disappear from the taskbar, making it difficult for users to access OneDrive. In addition, the OneDrive icon also disappears from File Explorer.

How to Restore missing OneDrive icon in Windows 10 taskbar

Enable system tray icon

  • Right-click on the taskbar and select the “Taskbar Settings” option.
  • In the taskbar settings window, scroll down to the “notifications area”. Click on the option “select which icon will appear on the taskbar”.
  • Check the toggle button next to Microsoft OneDrive. If it is off, be sure to change it to On.

    • Completely uninstall and reinstall OneDrive

  • Press Ctrl + R and type “regedit” into the box.
  • Navigate to the following registry directory: Computer HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Policies Microsoft Windows OneDrive
  • Here, right-click the registry entry “DisableFileSyncNGSC”, click Modify and enter “0” in the Value data box.
  • Click OK and exit the registry editor.
  • Then open Command Prompt as an administrator and type the following commands on separate lines: %SystemRoot% SysWOW64 OneDriveSetup.exe /uninstall%SystemRoot%SysWOW64OneDriveSetup.exe / install

    • Unhide OneDrive icon

  • Often, the problem may just be a hidden OneDrive icon. This is common in Windows 10, especially when there are a lot of icons on the taskbar. To check if this is the case with the OneDrive icon on your system, click the show hidden icons icon on the taskbar. This is the up arrow icon on the left of the taskbar. Doing so reveals all hidden icons. If your OneDrive was hidden, it will be shown in the small pop-up. In my case, as shown in the image below, OneDrive is not hidden.

    • Reset OneDrive

  • Press Win + R to open the Run window. Copy and paste the text below and click OK.% Localappdata% Microsoft OneDrive onedrive.exe / reset
  • Wait about two minutes to see if the OneDrive icon appears. Otherwise, repeat the process using the path below at this time.% Localappdata% Microsoft OneDrive onedrive.exe

    • Check policy settings

  • Type gpedit.msc in the Run window.
  • Navigate to “Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components”. Double-click the OneDrive option in the right pane.
  • Right-click “Prevent using OneDrive for file storage” and click Edit.
  • Make sure “Not Configured” or “Disabled” is chosen for policy configuration. Click Apply and OK.
  • Restart your PC and the issue should be resolved.
