WhatsApp automatically creates a backup of your chats on the device’s internal memory every day around 2am. You can use these simple steps to restore this backup to your device:

Start by uninstalling WhatsApp from your device. Reinstall the app from the Play Store.

Complete the setup process and check your phone number

Once your account is verified, WhatsApp should detect the local backup. Click “Restore” and WhatsApp will look for available offline backups.

Select a backup and click “Next” and WhatsApp will start restoring messages.

Restore WhatsApp messages through File Explorer

Restoring WhatsApp backup from local backup in the above steps will only restore the most recent backup. If you want to choose the backup to restore, the best option is to use a File Explorer. Follow these simple steps to use this method:

Install ES File Explorer from Play Store.

Open the app and look for the WhatsApp folder in the internal memory or SD card. The folder is named /WhatsApp/databases. If you cannot find the folder, search for “msgstore” and find the files in the following format: msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt12.

Choose the backup file you would like to restore and copy the file.

Rename the file so that it looks like a newer file.
