iPhone and iPad users can transfer money to friends and family in just a few steps using Apple Pay and the Messaging app. You also don’t need an active Apple Card to send money through iMessage. You can send any other iMessage user using your debit card if you have Apple Pay enabled on your smartphone.

How to send money through the Messaging app on an iPhone or iPad

  • Launch the Messaging app on your iPhone or iPad and open an existing conversation or start a new one. Please note that you cannot send money in group chats.
  • After starting a conversation with the person you want to send money to, tap the Apps icon next to the text box.
  • From the application toolbar, select the Apple Pay icon – it’s black, with a small white Apple logo and the word “Pay”.
  • Using the window that appears, enter how much money you want to send and tap “Pay”.
  • After entering a valid cash amount and pressing “Pay”, it will be placed in the text box like a normal text message. Submit and you will be asked to confirm payment. By default it will use Apple Cash or your default debit card to pay you – to switch to another payment method, tap the arrow on the right and select another from the list. A blue checkmark will appear next to the card you chose.
  • After selecting your Apple Cash card or debit card, confirm the transaction by double tapping the lock button of your device twice. Then use Face ID, Touch ID or enter your password to finish.
  • The money will be sent to the recipient’s Apple Pay account and will remain there until you receive it or seven days have passed. After seven days without payment being accepted, the payment will expire and you will have to resubmit it.
