How to Stop System From Sleeping on Windows 11 – Guide
By default, your Windows 11 PC will go into sleep mode after a certain amount of time. This will prolong the life of your laptop battery. To preserve battery life, Windows 11 switches your device to a low-power mode that disables specific components (including your display). It also helps you get back to work faster than if your computer was in sleep mode. If the default Sleep Mode settings are not right for you, you can change them to suit your needs. Most Windows 11 PCs, by default, go into sleep mode after a certain amount of time to save power. If you want to keep your Windows 11 PC active at all times, you can tweak the settings or use one of Microsoft’s PowerToys.
How to Prevent your PC from going to sleep in settings
It’s easy to prevent your PC from going to sleep using the Settings app. First, launch Settings by pressing Windows + i on your keyboard. Or you can right-click the Start button button and choose “Settings” from the list.
Under Settings, choose “System” from the sidebar and click on “Power & Battery”.
In the Power and Battery options, expand the “Display and Sleep” section by clicking on it if necessary. Below that, if you have a battery powered PC such as a laptop or tablet, you will see four options. If you have a desktop PC, you will only see two.
If you want to keep your portable PC always on, even when not plugged in, set “On battery power, put my device to sleep after” to “Never”.
If you want to prevent your PC from hibernating when plugged in, find the drop-down menu labeled “On battery, when plugged in, put my device to sleep” and set the option to “Never”.
In the meantime, you can also prevent your screen from turning off using the “Turn off my screen after” option (or options, for laptops) on the “Power and battery” page. To do this, set the desired option to “Never” using the drop-down menu.
After that close the Settings and your PC is set to stay up all night and all day. You can still put your machine to sleep manually using the power icon in the Start menu (choose “Sleep”) or using a dedicated sleep key on your device if you have one.
How to Prevent your PC from sleeping with PowerToys
Thanks to a tool that comes with the free Microsoft PowerToys utility pack, you can quickly switch when you want your PC to stay awake on the taskbar.
To do this, install PowerToys from the Microsoft Store app and run it. Activate the “Awake” module and right-click on the coffee cup icon in the floating taskbar menu. In the “Mode” menu, place a checkmark next to “Keep Awake Indefinitely”. When you want your PC to sleep again according to its usual settings, select “Off (Passive)” from the Wake Up menu.
