How to switch the default browser in Windows 11 – Guide
Microsoft insists that users use its Edge browser so much that replacing the default browser in Windows 11 is a little more labor intensive than in Windows 10. Rather than allowing you to easily modify something known as “default browser” in the Settings menu, now you need to twist the file associations for specific link types such as .html files, .htm files, http and https.
Also, we found that the Chrome browser was unable to modify these settings for you when we clicked on button to make it our default browser, rather than putting it in the proper menu for us to do on our own. However, Firefox can complete the same task strangely on its own. Possibly worst of all, however, is that even if you modify the settings precisely, Microsoft will still launch the Edge browser if you click on links that appear in Windows 11’s Search function or in its Widgets box.
Fortunately, it’s easy to change your default browser in Windows 11 if you just follow these simple steps.
How to change your default browser on Windows 11
1. Open the “Default apps” section of the Windows Settings menu 11. You can access it by opening the Settings menu, clicking on the Apps section and selecting Default apps, but it’s faster to just press the Start key to open the Start menu and Start typing “default apps” and then click on the link to the default apps menu when it pops up.
2. Scroll down the list of apps until you find the browser you want to set as your default and select it. For the purposes of this manual, I will show you how to set Google Chrome as your default browser, but you can select any competing browsers here: Mozilla Firefox, Opera, Safari, etc.
3. Scroll down to the HTTPS section and click on it to change the default Microsoft Edge application to the browser of your choice. As you can see, after you click on an app in the Default Apps menu, you are presented with a list of relevant file types, each of which has an app listed as the default to open it.
The first time you do this, everything related to the web should default to Microsoft Edge. To start changing this, scroll down to the HTTPS section and click the icon below it (which should be Edge) to select a new default app.
Windows 11 can crash up a window asking you to check the Edge before you stop using it – feel free to click “Toggle Anyway” and ignore this warning. Choose the browser you want to be the default, and this should change the HTTPS and HTTP defaults for the browser of your choice.
4. Repeat step 3 for .htm, .html, and any other web-related file types you use. Now comes the tricky part – you’ll have to do the same reassignment for each file type you want the browser of your choice to open.
To get started, make sure that HTTP and HTTPS have indeed moved from Edge to the browser of your choice. If the default application for opening HTTP links has not changed automatically, you will have to do this manually.
We also recommend that you change your default app to open .HTM, .HTML, .PDF, .SHTML and .XHTML. The last two are pretty obscure, so it’s rare that you click on one of them, but when you do, you’ll be greeted by your browser of choice instead of Edge.
